Lionel Messi - v7

Maybe. But then what do we get out of this long term contract and Messi going to MLS in a few years?

What do we get? It's another way of saying we'll be paying Messi 100m a year for 2 years, but we'll pay it later. Disguised as some sort of bogus "ambassador" contract. Where he does basically nothing except collect check after check.

This is the solution a broke club finds to still give a pharaonic contract to Messi. It's as if Bartomeu himself figured it out .

From here: ***********************************2021/6/2/22464839/lionel-messi-agrees-to-stay-at-barcelona-and-join-mls-in-2-years-report Not sure what their source of the 240m is.

I think we need to be realistic and pay what we can pay and pay the bulk of his salary based on the two seasons he will be playing for us.

The whole reason for the deal is being realistic as to what can offer Messi now.

That is the whole point of the contract and structuring it in way he would stay.

Maybe. But then what do we get out of this long term contract and Messi going to MLS in a few years?

Two seasons starting at 34 and 35 years old, then he goes to MLS at 36 and they pay a % of his wages to us. So the two years (or more) in MLS we are paying for nothing as he is part of Inter Miami and bringing zero benefit to FC Barcelona at another club.

Then MLS we are only half way through his deal and have to think of ways to make use of the Messi name to pay the 24m year outgoing to Messi.

Deal screams of desperation.

That's what perplexes me too. That's why I think we are subsidizing his wages at MLS, in a way just to placate him and keep him for now.

240m is not too much for 10 years. He'll be making Barca over 100m a year as a club ambassador. We could bring Suarez as head of La Masia as well. And Neymar as chief of Public Relations Office. MSN reunited.

When he is playing for us, yes. When he is not playing for us, especially after he hangs his boots, I don't think he will be making 100m for us as an ambassador. Past legends don't sell tickets, shirts or pull in sponsorship nearly as much as current players do.

 You of all people...

He'll bring nearly nothing for the club as an ambassador. His influence is 99% gone the moment he leaves or retires. So should this huge expenditure entry from our books.

But it won't, simply because we'll try to find ways to still pay Messi absurd money for a club in our position. In one way or another.

Because he is 2 years into a 10 year contract with Barcelona. If he is still playing and not retired, then he hasn't moved into the brand ambassador role.

It is not difficult to understand.

What it takes to get Messi to stay cant currently be afforded by club and would be split over longer contract.

Simple as that.

Barca do not lose out at all if he goes to Miami. It is a stipulation of his to stay in that scenario and all that happen is that Barca is still paying him remainder of salary couldnt afford in the previous two years.

Serghei got it in one. It is probably just current wages for 2 years, spread over 10 years. So we won't get any true benefit out of it long term. A deal cut from the cloth of Bartomeu and sprinkled with the piss of Rosell.

So basically you and JamDav are saying we are fattening up the contract purposely, because we are desperate to keep him? OK, understood.

In a nutshell. Really would be the most predictable and boring out of all possible outcomes. He stays, with a Bartomeu-like contract disguised under some fancy PR talk.
