Lionel Messi - v7

It is not difficult to understand.

What it takes to get Messi to stay cant currently be afforded by club and would be split over longer contract.

Simple as that.

Barca do not lose out at all if he goes to Miami. It is a stipulation of his to stay in that scenario and all that happen is that Barca is still paying him remainder of salary couldnt afford in the previous two years.

Right. So we're assuming he is worth what his current contract is and splitting this payment over 10 years. Paying him for 8 of those after he has left the club. And ignoring the diminishing returns as he continues to age.

At his current age, he is probably only worth his seasonal rate without the extended 8 year payments. But alas, desperate clubs do desperate deals.

So no more wage-cut charade, basically the same wages his earning right now for the next two-year period when he will be playing for us, however we gain from not losing him and spreading out his two-year wages over 10 years?

Wow. A win-win indeed.

They are getting to a figure which they think it is worth for Messi to stay the next two seasons and to remain linked to club as ambassador after retires and dividing it by ten as cannot afford to pay him the full salary in next couple years.

There is no relevance to diminishing returns or him playing for another club.

This is still Bartomeu's "work" btw. It's very hard to come to Messi and say. Listen, that idiot overpaid you by about 80%. So now, we need you to accept to extend the contract with 80% less money, because... well... the club is in ruins.

I know some here think Messi is a monument of noble virtues, but the man cheated taxes so he could be richer. Pretty fair to say money ranks pretty high in his list of life priorities.

Next two years while Barca in finacial trouble club pays out 20% of what would otherwise to keep him and remainder spread across 8 years with value put on keeping him linked to club after retires.

You get it now.

Dont agree with that.

The club would not give this contract if think he is being overpayed. They are doing it as think it is financially worthwhile for the club and it is what it takes to keep him.

No chance they over pay him by 80% because they think he was over payed before.

So how the heck are we going to reduce our wage bill, after the 22/23 season when Messi is gone, when he is not generating much money for us but we will still be paying a portion of his wages that we owe him?

In theory it is money saved from first two years so balances out and club no doubt will continue to use his name image whereas may not have in past.

What is your suggestion for what club should have done?

Increase debt by 240m to pay him in next couple years? Let him leave?

It is diminishing returns. We are assuming Messi is going to bring the same productivity at seasons aged 34 and 35 as when he signed his last contract in 2017 at 29, so that we guarantee the same wages just spread over a longer payment term.

So yeah, if we assume it is just a long term payment contract for him to play for us for 2 years, then I agree there's no relevance with another club.

But it depends on what the contract exactly is which none of us have the information on as it is not even signed yet.

Hey, it's not our money.

Would be funny if Pique will be president in 2030 and he still has to pay Messi 20m a year .

The idea is covid will be long gone by then, the club will be back to making 800m + a year in revenue, so this will be sustainable. So, it's not that big of a deal we will pay one of our biggest legends some 10-20m a year for nearly nothing.

Think of it like signing a Douglas or Matheus every year.

I don't have a suggestion. If I have to take a stand here, I'd say ask him to take a real wage-cut, not just a payment deferral like this scheme is. If he doesn't, let him leave.

It is my money. I am paying 186 euros a year as a soci alone, no to mention all the other stuff I pay the club regularly and ritually. ;)

But I get the point. Basically we have no other ways to keep him than something like this.

Depends on how much they believe Messi generates in income for next couple seasons.

If they calculate for example he generates say 100m a season then club profit by 152m across next two seasons when in dire need of income.

Have to balance that off against him not playing for club in future and still paying him but also take into account the income he generates for club still once retired.

Well... tough luck for you then .

You're contributing with 0.001% to every Cohiba Messi smokes on his 80m yacht.

Seriously, we can't do much about it. Better make fun of the whole thing.

Let's hope the club will make 1bn in revenue in the future, so the money paid to Messi will be almost irrelevant. But, as a principle, it is really bad how the club handled the relation with Messi. It's as if Barca is nothing without Messi. Even though when Barca and Messi first got together, Messi was nothing and Barca was still one of the biggest most renowned clubs in the world.

Really acted like a small club in all of this.
