I remember wrong or this is one of the users that only posts on Messi thread, does not contribute anything to this forum unrelated to Messi, and is preaching fanboyism with 0 critical thinking and footballing judgment???

wrong memories actually, I write about everything and objectively contribute to making this place better (except for those that contribute to making it worse)

Messi will open the 2021-2022 season with a goal a game in whichever league he is in so there is no debate left.

Book it.

I am really not. You, a statistics lover, should be able to see that. Check out every attacker AND mifielder player over the last 13 years. Compare their stats to Messi's. Realize that Messi's stats are over the roof compared to anyone else. Is that individual performance for individual talent/capacity?

Not enough of xG dawg.

That talk about who won something with his NT makes me laugh (not referring to you Rory in particular)
As if Poland could win Euros or WC.
This criterion is biased and partial to begin with, since NT trophies are won by major football powers, and only Spanish, Italian, German, French, Brazilian, Argentinian etc can be in the discussion.
Belgium's golden generation could not even win something. That means De Bruyne should never win Ballon D'Or?

There you see the irrationality and partiality when factoring in the NT trophies

I think that's exactly it though. The criteria is a bit ridiculous. Hence why it's highly likely Messi wins it. Regardless of specific criteria he'd be amongst the top to choose from still, for me a bit ahead of others but not by much. Lewandowski is unfortunate that his goals didn't take Poland through. He certainly deserved to advance. Unfortunately he's out at the group stage. This carries weight in deciding things like the ballon d'or. Whether that's fair or not is another debate.

Long story short, I'm saying he should easily win it in the context of what is required to win it. But also I think he should win it because imo he deserves it slightly more than a couple of others so far.

Yeah, let's give the Ballon D'Or to people who score 8 goals per season.

It is what it is.

Balon d'or is a hypebeast more in line with the media of winning credentials than actual best performances. In that regard the Euro will always be > Copa. Not saying Chiesa is better than Messi or had a better season than Messi.

But nobody is going to go back and watch the games. All they are going to see is Chiesa performances in the Euro, Chiesa getting a winning goal in the Italian Cup final and getting 15 club goals and 11 assists throughout the season (9 btw?).

Cannavaro won the trophy in 2006 despite getting relegated. So it has always been a popularity contest built around the story, not the quality.

Unpopular opinion but I would put Chiesa as third.

Clutch for both Juve and for Italy

Third best italian winger?
That's where he was a couple of weeks ago right?

Clutch for a Juventus ending 4th in Serie A and knocked out of CL by Porto...
Starting half of the games of the tournament on the bench...

CL: Scored 3 of the 4 goals vs Porto
Coppa Italia: Scored the winner
Serie A: Ronaldo was Juve's best player in the league, but Chiesa did help by scoring first vs Bologna in a must win game in the final round.

Euros:
Scored the winner vs Austria in the round of 16 in Extra Time
Scored vs Spain the Semi's
Was the only dangerous attacking Italian player in the Euro Final

In my opinion, the fact that he was clutch in different competitions in his first season in a big club and his first international tournament, think he should be high in the Ballon D'or list.

Again, this is my subjective opinion and I'm curious of your third best.

Yeah, it has become worse again since they changed it back a couple of years ago it looks like... Apparently the Bermuda captain decides better winners than these "prestigeous" journalists...

But lol Cannavaro wasn't relegated, he won the league IIRC. You can't blame the players for stuff like that. He was also as dominant as a CB ever was, winning the tournament as a clear starter obviously (did he also captain the team?). I think his win was fine, Messi wasn't yet a starter for Argentina for example, Ronaldinho had a bad World Cup etc. I thought Messi should've won it already in 2007, though.

I read the criteria when it was a joint price, but I can't find right now what they are currently. Please link if you have them!
But in no way can a player that isn't even a clear starter for his nation be the worlds third best player.

If Messi is first and Lewandowski is second, maybe Benzema or Suarez, just off of goals scored etc. Salah, Mbappe and Ronaldo did also score more than double what Chiesa did. Haaland, Kane...
Insigne is a better player than Chiesa as evident by him being a clear starter, he also both scored and assisted more than Chiesa last season. It's almost pointless to name players I'd have higher than Chiesa though, I could go on for ages, but I'd maybe have someone with a different role, like Busquets, Kante or Chiellini as one of the three. Jorginho could be high too...

Messi is very obviously the #1 though.

Hehe. I used Calciopoli to exasporate the point. Cannavaro had a fantastic world cup but should that have been the defining judgement for the Balon D'or?

2006 had Barcelona winning their first CL of the new era and also a league double. Yet the top 3 were Cannavaro, Buffon then Henry.
