Lionel Messi - v7

Laporta bought ronaldinho, and during his reign he gave guardiola free hands to assemble the team that he wants, and gave him freedom to tell ronaldinho and amigos to fuck off.
Not saying that he would do that again, but man clearly knows that his job is not to interfere with managers one. Only thing that is doubtful is that ronaldinho looked like a fat pig in last years so it wasnt that hard to dump him

Laporta was part of a young board that sought to rebuild Barca and more or less act as a commitee. He was a charismatic spokesman more than anything and had a good team around him including Cruyff.

None of that is there now and his last campaign exposed him badly.

He would be the last person would want to come in to make the decisions required and rebuild.

Needs a new approach.

Messi's name wasn't mentioned in the sacking of Valverde. He was sacked because of his results, the state of the team, and the very high probability of us ending up trophyless this season, as the team was constantly showing the same problems over and over again.

Sacking Valverde was the popular decision so, hypothetically, no need to mention Messi.

Keeping Valverde was an unpopular decision and there were headlines after that Messi told the board that he supported Valverde and thought he was a good manager despite the Liverpool result. This would be an example of the board using Messi's name to justify a fairly unpopular decision amongst the fanbase

And no, Messi publicly answering questions about Valverde does not mean he supports him. Any player should not be publicly saying that it might be time for a managerial change. Messi made the right PR move when he was asked about Valverde after the Liverpool debacle.

Messi came out and supported EV after Liverpool game and it was not only he but other heavy weights that backed him.

No one put that on Messi any more than it being he who publicly supported EV and he did not have to. Happens all the time.

What decision was justified by linking Messi and other top players to wanting Neymar back?

It was not the Barca board leaking it. The whole world knew those players wanted Neymar back.

There was nothing by board to target Messi there. Trying too hard to find reasons.

Plenty of headlines last summer that Bartomeu had made a promise to Messi to try and sign Neymar. I remember reading that Barto was satisfied after the Griezmann signing, but he was still trying for Neymar because of a promise to Messi.

If those headlines are false, then it is a clear cut case of the board using his name for their Neymar pursuit.

Yes there were headlines such as that and headlines that Neymar wanted to come back, that Barca wanted him that Pique wanted him that Suarez wanted him.

You have still not said in what way they 'used' Messis name... to what end?

There were a ton of rumours about Neymar evry day but you are focusing purely on those involving Messi and linking that to the board for some unknown reason.

I read those statements too, but I never felt that they were a backing of EV. They read more like generic PR statements. Any player should publicly say that they trust the manager. A managerial change is above the player's pay grade and should be made by the board.

He very much supported him and not the bland answer can see through easily.

Abidal's quote that made Messi so angry: "Many players weren't satisfied or working a lot and there was also an internal communication problem. The relationship between the coach and the dressing room has always been good but there are things as an ex-player that I could smell"..

Fair point, but still cant see how can he be the same fuck up as this board. This board from bottom to the top had so many brainfarts that is just unacceptable at this level. Question: do you have someone on mind? I cant really think of anyone capable enough to be honest

In this case, the board stating that they were chasing Neymar due to a promise to Messi means that they are "using" his name to justify their pursuit of Neymar (for marketing purposes), who had just publicly embarrassed the club 2 years before.

The point is new approach and Laporta isnt it. Would be surprised if even runs as he was so bad last time round.

Font is running and he is endorsed by Xavi. Don't know anything else about him.
