Lionel Messi - v7

I respect how Madrid easily god rid of Ronaldo and continued to do business. We did the same with Ronaldinho; the club is always bigger than the players. That being said, Messi can stay for a year or two and can add great value still but he needs to be stripped of certain authorities and listen to his manager. Against Bayern after few goals he decided to take things to his own hand and went back to the midfield. I am not sure if he was instructed to do so but my instinct tell me that it was his disobedience. If it is difficult to control Messi then the hard call must be taken

He drops deep because he has a midfield of idiots behind him. They're feeding him shit nowadays. Also we don't have a system in place. Setien just puts a weird line-up and then stands there like an idiot doing nothing.

Different situations with Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. Messi represent something different for us. Also, he is carrying us in the last few seasons and not the other way around. Ronaldinho was fat and partied.

About striping him of captaincy - a terrible decision to do it now. Would be like spitting in his face. Just bring in leaders and not French pussies and eventually the leafership will grow naturally in the team

Imo we should hold Messi next season and see how we are doing with a new team and Messi being the cherry on the cake.

Yes I agree but he needs to be treated like any other player. He need not to have amigos around him and he needs to follow his new managers instructions. Thats why we need a manager with a strong personality and we shouldn?t hope for Xavi to come in a year time. You never know how Xavi will turn to be, would rather we go for a great manager now.

True. Bring a leader of a manager and a leader vice captain and let them amigos go might fix a lot of the mindset issues we have

Look at Ramos. He wasn't a cantera player for Real. But they recruited wisely and he was a leader. Eventually they had to give him the captaincy and Ronaldo didn't have to play the leader role tending to stuff he is actually good at.

And how are you going to replace 40 goals and 25 assists? The only player who can give us that is Neymar and he would cost ?200m and a similar salary. Messi is the last player that should leave.

You don't have to have a 40+ goalscorer to win the league and champions league lol.

Two starting wingers with quality, a quality center forward and a midfield capable of scoring goals and the goals will be replaced.

Just how many teams this decade have excelled without a Messi or Ronaldo in their team? A team with quality players and coaching will replace Messi.

Whereas with Messi well score a few goals against Malaga or Levante, but when it really matters (in the UCL) hell just destroy our shape nonstop and allow other teams to constantly exploit our right side.

Best midfielder around
Messi has more than earned the right to stay for as long as he wants, on whatever salary he wants while performing how he wants. Mods should probably look this thread for a while at this point. If Messi gets his first proper manager since Pep combined with several of the useless veterans leaving, some are going to look very stupid after what they said in the heat of the moment in here. Which I can assure you, it will be quoted and brought back to light again.

We must take some simple steps:

2020-2021

1. Call for elections asap and get rid of this board and all the sporting department.

2. Plan a realistic sporting project for the next 3-6 years.

3. Get a decent manager and provide him with freedom to actually manage the squad.

4. Get rid of:
Suarez - He is past it physically and we need a faster striker. He is also toxic with young players for no good reason. He is also irritating.
Busquets - He is past it physically and not suited for modern football.
Rakitic - He is past it physically and mentally. He is also irritating.
Alba - He is past it mentally and physically. He is also irritating.
Semedo - He is bang average at 26. Bet on someone younger to be more special. Also got destroyed last game and might not recover mentally.
Umtiti - He is a walking injury.
Pique - He is past it physically and also offered himself up. Don't let him down. If he has low salary and bench role keep him.
Vidal - He is wild and not technically gifted. If he has low salary and bench role keep him.
Coutinho - High wages, bad mentality, slow, one footed and with a position that doesn't exist nowadays. If no buyers, or the new manager feels he can rejuvenate him, keep him.
Braithwaite - Not a Barca sub level of player. Play someone from the B team instead. If no options and no buyers, keep him.
Dembele - He is a walking injury. If no buyers or the new manager feels he can stay healthy and grow a brain, keep him.

in that order of importance.

(lol, impossible)

5. Keep:
Mats - Should be instructed to avoid risky passes. We can't get anyone better and is not our core problem.
Neto - Whatever, he will never play anyway.
Lenglet - We have to keep someone with experience. He has been decent, despite some shortcomings.
Todibo - He seemed really athletic while playing here.
Araujo - Same as Todibo, he looks promising.
Firpo - Good for a backup LB. We will need a starting one.
Bob - Good for utility backup role most of the times - avoid big matches at any cost.
Pjanic - He just signed, so it is what it is. Has experience too.
FDJ - Has really great potential.
Puig - Could have really great potential.
Messi - He cannot be sold and in my opinion shouldn't. Produces many chances and goals. Should have a reduced role / minutes.
Fati - Could have really great potential.
Griezmann - Perhaps give him a chance with a proper system.

(lol, impossible)

6. Promote the best we have from the B team to fill the empty spots:
we need players at: LB, CB, RB, CDM, CM, RW, CF, LW... we need a new team actually.

7. Try to find young, cheap and decent replacements for the spots that are still empty.

8. Do our best to finish top 4 in LL so we can qualify for next year's CL.

9. Try to avoid 4+ goal difference defeats in CL.

10. Give our best effort for copa del ray

2020-2021 onwards
11.
a - If Messi's level has dropped to a point he cannot even be an impact sub, say goodbye with a big fiesta. If not, reduced wages and role and keep going.
b - Get rid of remaining dead weight from step 4.
c - Replace last seasons' underperformers / flops.
d - Sell B players that didn't make the cut.
e - Promote most promising B players to fill the newly vacated spots.
f - Try to get better young, cheap and quality replacements for the worst positions. Perhaps gamble a little.
g - Evaluate the manager and coaching stuff. If the teams shows signs of health and improvement keep them. If not, try to get a better manager.
h - Aim for higher place in LL and CL than last year.

Repeat steps "11.a" to "11.h" until we are competitive again.

If we don't have the guts to let him go just yet, the minimum damage he will do off the ball is at CF. Good or bad, terminate Suarez and move Messi at CF. Put in guys who can run in midfield and on the wings please.

I don’t know why we decided wingers aren’t important. Look at Bayern... Gnabry, Coman, Perisic AND Sane. All rapid, physical players who can beat a man. On top of that they have Davies attacking too. Really impressive from Bayern managing to replace Robben and Ribery like that, many predicted they’d struggle after they left.

We’ve either played with no wingers or Griezmann LW, Messi RW who doesn’t even stay on the wing or relying on 17 year old Fati. Obviously we have Dembele but expecting him to stay fit and consistent is pointless. Imagine two ACTUAL wingers like Bayern’s wingers. Would like to see two world class wingers with Messi in the middle in a limited role, at this point in his career if you get the ball to him near or in the box he’s still the most deadly player on the planet easily. But for this we’d need a complete squad overhaul, no donkey Suarez, no Griezmann playing out of position, no Coutinho playing out of position etc. Very unlikely anything like this happens. Btw I’ve really given up on Dembele but I’d even give him a chance as one of the wingers in that sort of formation. Just need another world class one for opposite side.

Team captain just because the suits thought it was a good idea. Do you want him to come out and say the same cringy stuff he muttered after Rome and Liverpool? He had an interview before the CL started. He showed us against Napoli that he wasn't to win. After 4-1 at HT it was clear the game was lost, what more could be said?

The people that berate him for not being captain material come out and ask for Messi to be a leader and say something. Like it would mean anything. Funny stuff

@serghei: you writing idiotic stuff lately. Messi at CF, at his age, when he really never played there his whole life?

He is team captain because players voted him captain not because some 'suits thought it was a good idea'.

It is time for Messi to leave. There will be no fairy tale ending and that's OK. His legacy at the club and in football generally is secure. I think a move away would benefit both parties.
He doesn't have much time left and if he went to a club with a proper set up he still might win another Cl. A change of scenery would do him good and get him out of his comfort zone.
With Bar?a his legacy would hurt the younger players and hinder their development. Playing for him rather than trying to stamp their own mark would hurt the club and Messi too. We've seen this happening in the last few years. It's time for us to cut the cord and have a fresh start. Will it be hard. Yes. But it has to be done. This club is FC Barcelona not FC Messi.

We should try one more year. Give him a good team and say him to run more. If this doesnt work he should go next year but honestly I dont want to give the GOAT away.
