Lionel Messi - v7

Funny how people got on the Bar?a bandwagon for the stars and beautiful football and now are eager to see us humble and hard-working

You're mistaking clubs, mate.

What's wrong with wanting our players to work hard? Nobody will succeed based on brilliance and trickery alone.

Also all of those qualities can work in unison.

It's usually when these players win a lot does "brilliance and trickery" (fading, no less) take center stage over hard work.

Maradona played in Champions cup like twice in his life, right?

Back then only 1 club per country participated.
Today players of Real and Barca get 15 CL chances in their careers.

No wonder that current best players have more CLs than similar players from 70s, 80s or 90s like Cruijff, Maradona, Van Basten.
Even Ronaldinho played only a few times in a CL.

Cruyff played in one of the best teams of all time and has 3 CL on the trot.

Van Basten played in what is considered by many the goat team. Had enough chances, doesn't help that he hanged them up at 28 due to injuries.

Maradona couldn't lift Barcelona to greater heights. Is it fair to blame him for that? No, but as a supposed uncontested goat he should've done more, don't you agree? Then he goes to Napoli which he raised to Seria A champions which is great and one of his best feats. Still couldn't win a CL. One time let's say that he faced RM so it should be excused, however if you wanna be fair it seems that Maradona can't really win it a alone evrytime like people would suggest. So anyway, in the second year he was eliminated by Spartak Moscow. Yeah, fail.

Anyway, my point remains, every player has ups and downs even goat caliber ones. Every single one.

I never understood why people want to make discrimination between legends that played 20 - 30 - 40 - 50 years apart.

Stats aside between the two. Let?s count how many seasons in the UCL Messi or Ronaldo were superior.

2007/2008 Ronaldo
2008/2009 Messi
2009/2010 Messi
2010/2011 Messi
2011/2012 even
2012/2013 even
2013/2014 Ronaldo
2014/2015 Messi
2015/2016 Ronaldo
2016/2017 Ronaldo
2017/2018 Ronaldo
2018/2019 Messi
2019/2020 even

12/13 Ronaldo, played against a strong Manchester United and scored home and away. Quarterfinal 3 goals against Galatasaray and against Dortmund atleast 1 goal.
11/12 Messi, even against Chelsea he played well just unlucky

nothing wrong, but i prefer flair and trickery over donkeys that run and defend a la atletico or chelsea in the mourinho days. sure, you have to mix it up, but in the end football is a form of entertainment. you don't really watch it to see 22 idiots run a lot.

There are pros and cons for every generation. You can't really compare across different eras. There are so many variables that it's impossible.

Ronaldo PR machine is so strong it?s even in the Barca forum ffs. He won a national team trophy because they didn?t have to play Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium. Then Ronaldo goes off injured, griezmann missed chances and Eder the nobody scored a wonder goal. Meanwhile Higuain misses one of the best chances in a wc final. But reeee Messi bad Ronaldo good.

Agreed.

Exactly like the quote : CR has x UCL and Messi only has y, what clubs are CR and Messi ?' I didn't heard of them.

To be honest, this seems trite, but unless you lived through the era, statistics don't do any justice.

For instance, Ajax had 3 CLs in a row in 1970s and Bayern did too right after them.

But Ajax beat the likes of Inter and Juventus in 2 of the 3 CL finals while Bayern beat AM, Leeds, and Saint Etienne.

Not to mention Bayern finished 10th in Bundesliga!! while they won the CL in 74-75.

Numerically, both Ajax and Bayern seem equivalent yet that Ajax side was one of the best ever while the Bayern side was just very good but not quite an era definer.

Fair enough, I did think to give it that way but couldn?t be sure because I didn?t fully remember the seasons. Sounds about right though
