You guys are so overreacting, he was injured this whole copa america and not even close to being 100% yet he created alot of great chances and had some really dangerous atempts on goal.
He is still one of the best players in the world, he lost agility and acceleration but he is still faster than Xavi or Iniesta in their 20s, has world class vision, passing and one of the best shooters and finishers in the game.

Im pretty sure even declining a bit, he will still be a world class player in 2 years time and good enough to help Argentina fight for another world cup.

Does he need to? No... But why shouldn't he? Unless he has a massive decline and Argentina are better off without him and have better players to repalce him, like Portugal are better without Ronaldo, but I doubt it.. I think Messi will still be world class 2 years from now, he is just that good, so no reason not to try to get another world cup.

I agree. In terms of World Cup performances:

1) Maradona 86
2) Messi 2022 / Garrincha 62 / Pele 70
3) Zidane 06 (he was shit in 98 except for the final; in 06 he led France past Spain, Brazil, Portugal, and almost Italy).
Also baggio 94 is close to messi in 2022 imo.
But thats the revisionism I guess. Zidane only stepped up in 98 final and in 2006 only vs brazil but people nowadays think he put in maradona 86 performances. And Baggio is remembered fir missing the penalty as if he didnt lead them there and two others also missed.

Same with messi in 2016. That was his best copa but they lost the penalties and he missed. So thats the narrative and they gsve the ballon dor to ronaldo for eder bailing out that greece performance of the country..

Even before the start of the Copa, there was talk about a muscle rejuvenation (whatever this term means) in preparation of the World Cup.

We'll see if this is bogus or not

He needs to visit the Italian doctors he was seeing for that 14-15 treble :mou:

His conditioning from Jan 2015 to June 2015 was INSANE. Look at how lean he was.

Good shout on Baggio, Romario and Hagi and Stoitchkov that year too.

He is retired in MLS, being fit isn't an option.

If he wants to be a holding midfielder and run 10 km per game i do think he can still do it, but Argentina has a good midfield so no need for experiments. Not having agility near the box is game over. Xavi was nowhere near the box.

I remember that very well, think they gave him the Bayern steroids 😰🔥
Yeah, every know and then he would fly to italy. Antonella could go shopping with cesc milf wife while they went to see a doctor.
I mean, we have to be pretty naive to think footballers are not roided to the max with everything involved and svailable.

I remember when Bale went to Madrid, he went from skinny to planet of the apes chimp in a few months.
Same with goretzka at bayern for example.

Messi is a lot more reasonable to know when he should step aside. He has been mentioning this in recent interviews.

I don’t know what messi will do. People need to understand there is a rare element at play here that we don’t see often. When the fellow argentinian players tell messi they want him to continue they truly mean it, and not some faux pc bull.

Argentinians are also very superstitious. If they consider messi as a lucky charm they will demand him to be part of squad. Even if barely plays.

Agreed, I'm not even sure if he even knows what he wants to do.

I guess we'll find out soon. Hopefully, sooner rather than later.

I am leaning towards yes tbf simply because of what I said and argentinian players will stalk his house if he says no until says yes.

Suarez was bench player at this copa. Will also tell him those are best seats to the game. Siu

He still has the 2025 Finalissima buffer zone. Will asses at this season's end how he is and can safely retire after Finalissima. If he actually feels great physically and mentally then he can have a go at WC 2026.

Anyway, can retire whenever he wants now. Even a failed WC won't matter to anyone. Argentina has a strong enough team to reach semis.
