Okay. Sorry. Maybe taken this too far. My point is just Ronaldo definitely should be in discussion one of best players of all time which is different from best of all time. Best of all time has already lost that claim because messi accepted as better player.

Maradona was just a better player. Ronaldo stat padded like crazy with the best United team in Fergie's era and the best or second best Madrid squad in their history. No one can say Ronaldo wasn't exceptional, but not a better player than Maradona.

Nah Ronaldo was the main reason it was Fergies best side.

Maradona was regarded as best in world for maybe 1 or 2 seasons in 80s.

Ronaldo at club level dwarfs what Maradona achieved.

Maradona more gifted but thats enough to a point but performing week in week out for biggest clubs is more admirable than being a unprofessional drugged up mess at Napoli who for spells would only train when felt like it etc.

Also he is a proven drugs cheat.

Winning a couple titles while being unprofessional gets used as some kind of positive.. it isnt.

not much tbf. when i was a kid and watched the 94 WC he was basically done already. youtube and other video mostly.

but it's easy to see he had incredible technique. his touch and vision were ridiculous. cristiano ronaldo is a peasant in that department, when you compare him with maradona.

Team shapes and minimising of space is non existent in that Bayern game. Shows how much defending as a team has improved.

Wide open game where players head towards opposition goal at 100mph evry time get it and idea of defending is nearest man fly into a tackle.

That game is not all that impressive from Maradona really. Couple asssists though and must give away ball close to half the time he has it.

Some good moments and a lot of giving ball away.

No one here bar 1 or 2 people have seen maradona at this best, so no one can speak to how good he was or wasnt' on a individual basis, but his reputation says he's 1 or 2 of all time, very little is gonna change that, he'll forever be top 5 at the worst, and above Ronaldo, even though I appreciate the game in game out consistency of the modern players, which is why I'd take the likes of Xavi/iniesta/modric over zidane, but I've seen those players myself, can't say anything about maradona outside of videos.

If the argument is cant judge players not seen as much of compared to modern players then it isnt a goat debate.

His repuation on achievements is overblown at times.

Dont need to watch every game to realise that.

Maradona at his best was 1986 WC and every game can be watched on that.

JamDav I agree he has enhanced it already. This is his best WC and he's been much better than he was in 2014. This WC will give a nice look to his overall WC stats and shit.

But it'll be cemented further by the Final Triumph because history books don't care about runner ups.

It isn't just on him. He can have the best game of all time but still lose the final. His teammates need to help him.

It is really stupid to not count the final though. It is inarguably the most important moment of each WC.

I get that they want to avoid being entirely affected by the „moment“ but in tight races (which means almost always in these 6-7 game tournaments), the final should play a (big) role on the voting.

Maybe the solution would be to just vote before and after the final and then add up the votes.

That was discussed on tv the other day.

Edit:May have picked that up wrong as cant see anywhre confirmed but seems they are voting before game ends but as late as possible.

The truth is.. only god knows.
