By the way, as I've said recently, not only was Laporta lying the whole time, but he used Leo's renewal to get elected.

I think that Leo wanted to stay(mainly because of his family), but due to dire financial and sporting situation, did not really care about leaving either.

On the other hand, Laporta wanted him gone to balance the books and start the rebuild. It is becoming more and more apparent that he did not want to keep Leo. If he did, he would not sign Depay,Aguero etc and he would cut salaries,sell/loan some of the dead wood. In any case, if he really wanted it, he could keep him, one way or another.

Either way, he is telling lies to everyone. He wanted Messi gone and lied all the time. There's no way he thought everything was alright financially between the election period and August.

They kept postponing the renewal, while he brought more players and did not sell a single player up to that point.

And suddenly they supposedly found out that we could not handle Leo's contract

On the other hand, I think that Leo also contemplated about joining another team and avoid wasting his last good years here. Counting from 2017/18 onwards, the team and coach were not world class for 4 years.

So everyone got what they wanted, except for the loyal fans who expected a proper and honest farewell.....

Most likely scenario. Even though it leaves the door open to speculation when the Messi camp seemed frustrated with the board.

Laporta did the right thing. This team isn't good enough even with Messi. Better start the rebuild now than in two years.

Tough one I would say. Not only that Leo represents so much for us, but you can't find a free player on similar salary(with the discussed 50% cut) that is so good. 2 more years of Messi and a decent send off would have been right for all parties, IMO.

Yeah, he got so low in my eyes with that move. It's abysmal the way we departed from the best player in our history.

There was no 50% cut. It was all about giving Messi the money he wanted but over 4/5 years and paying him huge money when could be playing in MLS.
