Yeah I think Messi was the one who wanted to leave and he made an agreement with Laporta to make it look like it's because of financial reasons and something both couldn't control. That way Laporta can't be blamed for kicking him out nor can Messi be blamed for wanting to leave a sinking ship.
I think that Leo wanted to stay(mainly because of his family), but due to dire financial and sporting situation, did not really care about leaving either.
On the other hand, Laporta wanted him gone to balance the books and start the rebuild. It is becoming more and more apparent that he did not want to keep Leo. If he did, he would not sign Depay,Aguero etc and he would cut salaries,sell/loan some of the dead wood. In any case, if he really wanted it, he could keep him, one way or another.
Either way, he is telling lies to everyone. He wanted Messi gone and lied all the time. There's no way he thought everything was alright financially between the election period and August.
They kept postponing the renewal, while he brought more players and did not sell a single player up to that point.
And suddenly they supposedly found out that we could not handle Leo's contract
On the other hand, I think that Leo also contemplated about joining another team and avoid wasting his last good years here. Counting from 2017/18 onwards, the team and coach were not world class for 4 years.
So everyone got what they wanted, except for the loyal fans who expected a proper and honest farewell.....
