Atletico Madrid will have to settle for a fee though, so not free at all.

But despite having been available all summer, and with plenty of big guns desperate for a right winger (Man Utd, Roma, ourselves, Chelsea if Willian/Hazard left) only Atletico decided to take - a late - punt on him.

I'd agree. I don't see him as anything special. I'd for one much rather have Dembele and Malcom, who are better and younger.

Good indicator might be his matches in Europe against better sides. 2 times vs. Barca, 2 matches vs. Atletico, vs. Juve... nothing interesting. Solid in Atleti matches.

League makes them look better than they are.

There's a reason why no big teams were willing to pay the money Sporting wanted for Gelson. The biggest reason Atletico took a gamble on Martins is due to the fact they manage to get him for free due to his supposed contract termination and the most they were willing to offer Sporting was around 22 Million and even then Sporting filed a complaint against Atletico and there's a big chance they will have to eventually pay a big fee for him.

He's fast, a hard worker but that's it. He has no end product and severely lacking compared to other talents that are younger than him such as Mbappe,Dembele,Malcom,Coman, and even fellow Portuguese compatriot Guedes and other talented wingers.

He reminds me of Alexis Sanchez when he played for Udinese in terms of attributes and style of play.
I loved Alexis, but I understood he wasn't the player for Barca.

I'm sure Malcon was one of the better options out there, but Atleti signed Gelson Martin's who's 23 years old, and would have been even a better signing than Malcom for the right wing.

If Alexis didn't work, it's b.c he lacked in the technique department.
He had good speed and good ball driving ability with space, but as soon as a team parked the bus and he couldn't tell on his speed, he was not very useful.
I hope I'm wrong, but Barca need to start prioritizing technique and skill over super speed.

Gelson Martin's has both, and he went to Atletico for free.

Lol it’s the complete opposite actually. Gelson Martins is all about speed with some technique as bonus. Malcom isn’t that fast, he’s a technical player. Technically Malcom is more complete, that’s why Malcom is far more better at playmaking than Martins, and he’s definitely better than Martins in tight spaces. Without his huge acceleration, Martins would totally be an average player. I don’t know what you’ve been watching honestly...

For Valverde’s system I don’t know which one fits more though. Valverde likes his team to play defense in its own half so there are counters to exploit. Barca doesn’t play much possession super high on the pitch so there aren’t lots of tight spaces to fight anymore.

Those teams are good teams though.
I'm sure if Messi played for Sporting and he played againsThose teams he wouldn't be as good either

Yes,Malcom is a technical player, but aren't all players technical to some.degree?

I think we are gonna have to wait and see.
I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see him as a very good technical player from.what I've seen

Im not so sure that Messi at false9 wont work anymore. Malcom and Dembele would have to transform into goalscoring wingers though (not the creators they currently are). No idea if this can be coached - but Neymar for example managed to do it for 1 season (focusing on running behind defences).

Another option to a play both, Malcom and Dembele, could be a 3-4-3, which would be pretty sick if you think about it. Suarez would be the penalty box presence, Busquets is the defensive black hole that covers Messis lack of defending and Messi himself can focus on doing what he does best. We even have the mobile (wide)midfielders in arthur and coutinho to play such a system.

Edit: Frenkie de Jong would be great in the center of defence in a 3-4-3, which is why I wouldnt mind selling Digne if we get him (just depending on la masia wouldnt be too bad either).

Says the reason why his release clause is low is due to choice as it will be easier to renew him especially if his performances are great within a year.
