Dembele and Malcom are wingers not strikers. That formation won't work. It is either Suarez as striker or Messi as false nine.

It is more like this:

I actually like it, but we have to wait and see if Malcom and Dembele can finish their chances.

How much?

180M.

I don't see a problem though because its not like we set it at 70 or 80 what could easily end up in an Umtiti situation. 180 is still huge and this far only Neymar was more expensive than that.

Don't think we'll ever have to worry somebody would activate that and if he is doing good we will have negotiations for a much higher salary soon enough anyway.

This

180m is quite alright - Unless of course, we land up in a position where he sets the world on fire attracting interest from all over and we are not even in a position to immediately offer a renewal with increased salary like we did with Umtiti this year!

And setting the world on fire would be having a season similar to the one that Salah had last season which is like pretty far away from the dude's current reach anyway

It sets up a interesting dilemma between both Dembele and Malcom.

If Malcom can provide the Workrate+Defense, he will be a favorite by Valverde and Malcom can also provide the ability in attack as well since he's really good on the technical part of things. Dembele it's obvious he won't ever be some defensive beast but to me he will bring even more to the attack than Malcom will IMO due to talent levels.

However the gap between the two Dembele vs Malcom in terms of talent isn't gigantic like lets say Neymar vs Vidal/Deulofeu. It could end up being the differences between lets say Neymar vs Douglas Costa, Dembele being better in terms of talent but Malcom himself is no slouch himself either.

There's a disclaimer though this is nothing but theory. If Malcom comes out swinging in Pre-season and early on in the season showing us what he can do and very well, Dembele needs to work his ass off and show Valverde and the rest of the team that he is the superior talent and that he deserves that RW spot assuming Valverde decides to stick with both Messi and Suarez in the same lineup.

Good post. Few remarks.

1) I don't know much about his talent since I haven't seen enough of him. I know (1) he's talented and (2) not in the same tier as Dembele. But remains to be seen. I don't doubt he'll do well in attacking phase but probably not as good as Dembele. Which is fine.

2) If he can defend, he'll play in more big matches than Dembele - I assume. But we don't know that. All we have is his statement. On the other hand, defensive contribution was regarded as his main weakness in Bordeaux. I read somewhere that back in Brazil he worked hard in both directions, but since he was Bordeaux's main star didn't do much. Shall see.

3) I hope he does well from the beginning. For 2 reasons. (1) the obvious one, improving the squad (2) making Dembele work hard. I wouldn't mind if he took Dembele's spot at the beginning, would love to see some fight from the boy. I still trust in Dembele, but needs to show some fire.

He says his idol is Neymar? Has he been following Barca lately?

Also, it explains why he has 180 release clause same as Neymar's was.

In July 2015, state authorities in São Paulo discovered a fraud scheme when it was revealed that Malcom had obtained his driving licence – which usually takes three months of practice – only twenty days after his 18th birthday.

Defensive contribution is often pointed out as main weakness with most young forwards/offensive minded players unless they are workhorses like Pedro who are willing to run all day. Pedro has often even ran too much and was wasting his energy (IIRC even Pep said that to him a few times) but he was appreciated by most fans for always giving his best for the team.

For players with weakness in their defensive game clubs should recognize whether that's mostly because:

1.) lack of tactical discipline/awareness - players are often found out of position because they don't know where to be or if/when to track back because of their inexperience and/or lack of football IQ. If they have high enough football IQ (I believe Dembele does and we'll see about Malcom) then they should improve naturally when they get more experience and obviously with working on their issues with coaches in trainings.

2.) players don't have physical attributes to contribute defensively - this can be a problem with older players (and in our case is with Messi) but usually shouldn't be with young players (most of them are great athletes but of course you also have players who are slow and/or don't have lungs to run for 90 minutes when they are 20 or 23) on top level unless they are not 100% fit which I think was the case with Dembele last year so I think he'll improve his defensive game this season if he'll stay healthy. And with a coach like EV he should if he'll want to play. I don't expect him to turn into Pedro but he'll have to do his share of defensive work like other 8 outfield players. Midfield and defense already have to work harder because of Messi's and many times also Suarez's lack of effort defensively so we can't afford to have another player in the lineup who won't defend when he has young legs/energy to do so.

3.) players don't have work ethic/workrate to help defensively - unless you're Messi you won't succeed at Barça if you won't give a s*** about doing required defensive work to help the team. But even Messi worked harder when younger or he wouldn't become what he is today and get a privilege to "run smart" or in other words not doing anything defensively in 90-95% of the games. But because of who he is and what he brings to the team offensively his team mates are willing to give 10-20% more in defense to compensate for that. They shouldn't do the same for other players.

the Neymar buyout clause situation is the exception rather than the rule. he wanted to leave and PSG paid the fee, not many players want to leave Barca

Umtiti tried using it to get a better wage by flirting with other clubs, we called his bluff and hes still here
