Marquinhos

To me he will always be known as the "one" that escaped. I wonder if we would have bought him had the club appointed Lucho 1 year earlier instead of Patata.

Well, if he ever leaves PSG, I hope it'll be for Barca.

I don't want RM or MU to recruit him.

Nah, that will be always be Thiago Silva. If we didn't buy Cesc (or Sanchez), he probably would have joined. The only worthy successor to Puyol who would've ensured the first back to back Champions League win in history.

Marquinhos? He was 19 and cost like 30M when he was bought. Of course it's now easy to say he was worth it (more than worth it tbf), but at the time not really.

That would be two horrible choices indeed.

I think that we have discussed Thiago Silva already so I just have to disagree on that one.

Yes, but I am talking in hindsight so that his development was unlikely is irrelevant here.

I rather have a 21 year old Marquinhos with 10 + years ahead of him who is already on a very high level than a 31 year old Thiago Silva that is only going to go downhill from now on. It's not even a contest for me.

Exactly.

And for example, if PSG has to sell one CB, I hope it will be TS. Because as you said, he can only go downhill. And the more he ages, the more he's plagued with injuries.

Between marquinhos and TS, there's no contest if you have to pick one.

That's not the point anyway since we're not talking about buying these players at this time. Hindsight is indeed 20/20.

[strike]Should've bought Varane as well.[/strike]

didn't silva reject us for psg?

We didn't sign a cb the season after our CL win because we still had puyol.

He meant when he was still a Milan player.

Same problem as Marquinhos. Barca was interested but NEVER sent any real offer.

IIRC Milan wanted to trade Alcuntara for Silva in 2011 but we didn't want to. In the summer of 2012 when Milan wanted to sell him we weren't interested anymore (for whatever reason).

Wow that was dumb, because the following summer 2013 it was tito who wanted to go all in for silva. And by that point puyol was done.

And Thiago left for Bayern... Well, I guess the reason for not wanting him anymore in 2012 was because we bought Song for CB.

Actually we were apparently interested in Marquinhos during the summer of 2013 if we are to believe EMD and Sport. Instead Zubi proclaimed a "fit" Puyol as the long-awaited new signing for the central defense.

This entire discussion is all about hindsight.

The difference here is that we actually needed a defender back in 2013 and that we showed interest in Marquinhos and could have bought him for 30 million or a similar sum of money.

Varane was a player that we had showed zero interest in but in hindsight we could/should have bought him too.

President of FC Barcelona
Chelsea reportedly enquired about him and Nasser told them to not even bother making a bid lol
