We don't need a young centerback, we have plenty of those. We need someone who can come in and kick some opposing teams in the ass.

Going after a short term solution to our problems is misguided IMO. What we need is rebuild our team, it won't happen overnight and it may take more than 1 season to accomplish it.

ATM Marquinhos is not at the same level as Benatia, but he has a higher a ceiling and his attributes makes him a better fit for Pique and our playing style.

A stop gap solution might be best, a 27 year old who can come and sure us up while we groom Bartra and Ie, then him off in a couple seasons.

Not going to moan us getting Marquinhos, but we should know PSG by now, and we have:

1. Edgar Ié (Barcelona B, '94, Portugal U20)
2. Frank Bagnack (Barcelona B, '95, Cameroon U20)
3. Rodrigo Tarin (Juvenil A, '96, Spain U18, U19)
4. Xavier Quintillà (Juvenil A, '96, Spain U18, U19)
5. Carlos Blanco (Juvenil B, '96)
6. Adrià Vilanova (Juvenil B, '97)
And 7. the recently bought Pelayo Suárez ('98, Spain U16)

Not counting RBs and LBs who can play in CB as well, and you get 7 reasons why buying Benatia should be a priority over Marquinhos.

Here's a little factoid in case you've missed it: when Pique returned to Barca he was 2 years younger than Bartra's current age, and he still was able to establish himself as an XI. If Bartra couldn't establish himself ahead of Mascherano (a great player, but not a CB) under 2 different coaches; then he never will.

Have you seen the Bayern-Madrid game? With our playing style, having 2 slow defenders against a fast counter attacking team will get us killed. It's quite interesting that the issue of Benatia's compatibility with Pique has been a topic of so little discussion on this forum. Why? Because we're frustrated with how bad our defense has been for so long, and we're desperate for a solution.

But when you think about it rationally, if we could remain competitive in the league with Mascherano then we'll still be with Marquinhos. Sure our chances for the CL may be better with Benatia. But that's only over the short term, over the long term we'll have a better chance of actually winning it if we have a defense that actually suits our playing style not a stop gap solution; bearing in mind that even the heavy favorites (e.g. Bayern, Barca in the past) have a hard time winning it.

As for our youngsters. How many of them do you think will get a chance to play ahead of a +40m signing? And even if 1 or 2 of them did, how many years before they become part of our XI? That's at least 4-5 years, assuming that Benatia doesn't become a very expensive flop for us. But by that time a player like Ie or bagnack will be 24-5; still young, but will they be able to adequately develop if they remain in the shadows for that long; and even if they get a chance, how many of them will actually make it?

we need a strong presence in defence and not a replica of Bartra. imagine pique been injured then we will play Bartra and marquinhos that is disaster waiting to happen.I am not against marquinhos because he is young but because he not physically developed. I will rather will get one of laporte or mussachio or both if we want to get 2 CB's.

Nasser being a retired tennis player and living in Paris probably dont want to miss a single minute of RG.

Or, Pep put faith in our club's youth players which paid incredible dividends
Yes he did, more so than Tito & Tata. But our defense has been a disaster for at least the past 2 years & Bartra has been the only 3rd choice we've had during that time; if he was good enough to make it, he probably would've done it by now.

If we're only getting him because he's young and can play at RB and it turns out PSG is playing hard to get again, I'd prefer we go all out on Benatia (40-45M) and a cheap 4th choice CB and use Bartra as second choice RB.

RB: Montoya, Bartra, Adriano
CB: Benatia, Pique, Bartra, 4th CB
LB: Alba, Adriano, Montoya

It's also good for next year
RB: Montoya, Godswill, Bartra,
CB: Benatia, Pique, Bartra,
LB: Alba, Grimaldo, Montoya

Every club has young CBs in his youth system, ypu guys are saying the obvious
All this players aren't 1st team players and are years away from it ,also there is no guarantee they would be good 1st team players ,those are unproven prospects while players like Marquinhos while not fully developed he has shown he is capable 1st team player with a room for improvement

Barca youth players? we had many gr8 prospects in CBs ,I mean you are stating some 16&17 years old players for god sake, have you ever heard of a CB names Terron?he is as old as Montoya and he was supposed to be the next Ayala when he was 16 and both Spain&France was fighting for the kid to choose one of them as his NT,last I've heard of him is that he is playing in the 3rd division
Bagnack is freakin horrible CB ,he has shown nothing to make anyone believes that he is our future CB ,Edgar is way too injury prone to count on him ,the others aren't even in Barca B
One of those players might turn out to be a beast ,but the club can't plan his future based on this hope ,a young CB like Marquinhos should be a smart decision,if one of our prospect players turned out good I doubt Marquinhos will affect his growth
