Didn't expect to catch the game but found some channel in the end and saw large chunk of the match. Apart from the red card (which sadly led to Argentina goal) I think Caceres did very well vs. Argentina. Very composed and aggressive.

He actually had a very good game overall, but he's going to be remembered for gifting Argentina victory at the end there. Still, he's a true Uruguayan.

he wasn't composed though.

he was his typical self.

very committed (love his surging runs) but made some awful decisions including the tackle that earned him his first yellow. and giving the ball away cheaply to jonas, then sliding in and failing to win it back, then tripping him up and getting sent off and costing uruguay the game.

he's a pub league footballer's brain inside a world-class footballer's body.

it's tragic, but I can see why pep got rid.

I still think he'd be usefull as a fullback in our system. Abidal isn't exactly a rocket scientist after all, and Puyol's did a lot of foolish things in his early 20s too, though not to this degree.

He wasn't panicking though, Meta. It's just the Caceres style. He looks a bit erratic but he is always confident.

oh I agree. you of all people know how much I called for him to be used at LB last year.

but I think there was something in training which really turned pep off him.

perhaps an inability to take instructions on-board and learn from them? after all, abidal has improved since pep took over; so maybe caceres' hard-headedness was his real downfall. after all it seems short-sighted to give up on such a physical specimen of a defender (during his medical with us the docs found NO trace of injury) at the age of 22 just because he plays like an idiot.

Pep is stubborn, I think the biggest problem is he wanted to spend his "development" energy on the Atletic players he was already familiar with, hence Victor Sanchez getting as many if not more chances despite showing even less. I think Caceres' biggest problem was Pique exceeding everyone's expectations. Hence Pep's insistence on bringing in the Ukrainian Jesus who he assumed would be an instant rotation player.

Caceres would have been a great squad fullback considering our left side already has nothing to write home about, but he needs experience if he is ever going to stand a chance of getting better, and Pep apparently doesn't want to "waste" the fullback positions, even if Abidal is far from perfect himself.

Anyway I wish him luck. I still think for a 22 year old his positives outweigh his negatives.

Caceres is a clown.

Big time clown...I was sooo disappointed when he was signed but then again I was hoping for Garay too sooo

Caceres has shown glimpses but largely he looks like a player who has no idea what he is doing defensively...Constantly caught out of position and having to resort to his pace to make up for it...And typically arriving late with the challenge...I think he's done as a Barca player, that's a loan that can never be long enough, IMHO...17 million for him too

Could be the worst purchase in this era for the club

Caceres just needs the time to play. If FCB had not gotten off to such a great start and then come under such pressure, it would have been a better year to get Caceres used to the system. As it were, Pep needed players he could trust. Hopefully a loan spell will help Caceres mature as a player. If there is improvement with Martin at Juventus and really, if he can't improve playing next Chiellini, Cannavaro, and Grosso then ... well ... sorry Nolan ...

Honestly, I absolutely don't believe that we will see Caceres in a Barca shirt anymore, as it goes for Hleb, too. So, even if I hope about that, I don't see it Barca winning something by that.

We have so many deffensive options in the team already, plus homegrown players like Muniesa and Fontas, who could use Pep's huge trust for the cantera. My prediction for next season is Juve refusing to use a possible buy-option and Barca selling him to a club like Villareal or Atleti for a double less than we actually bought him.

He's done with us, I think. Maybe in time we will wonder why we actually loaned him, before selling him.
