Messi was also a winger. Then he was a false 9 and now people want him to be a CAM, or even a second striker. It is the qualities that matter, they are the ones that make a player suitable to play in a certain position.

The transition from winger to fullback is not the same as from winger to center forward. :banghead:

And before you bring it up, yeah Alba was a winger before he was converted to leftback at Valencia, but right now we need defensive stability, and two attacking fullbacks won't bring us that. DonAndres's post here earlier summed it up very nicely.

serghei you never fail to surprise me. First i thought you were just an Alves fanboy. Now you hit it out of the park by saying Cuadrado is a RB

Glad to entertain you man. I am not an Alves fanboy, and I need to make one thing clear, because we keep running into each other on this forum, and it's getting redundant.

I believe in the idea that every team has a way or playing, an identity of some sort. What works for a team won't necessary work for another one. If Cuadrado were to play RB for Fiorentina he would suck and suck hard. If he were to play RB for Barcelona, he might be just exactly what we need.

If you can understant the words in bold, OK, if not, just don't reply to my posts.

I can understand what you're trying to say. Just not so sure we should take the risk in converting Cuadrado to rightback. He could succeed, but then again, he could fail hard.

 Did you know that during Pep's time, Alves played some matches for us as a winger? I suggest you read this article on zonalmarking.net and then we could talk.

What identity? We had Abidal and Alves before. Now we have two attacking FBs. Where does this identity thing come from? Alba/Iniesta/Neymar as attacking flank with Montoya/Alexis/Xavi as the conservative one makes much more sense and much more in sync with our "identity" than Cuadrado/Xavi/Alexis

The thing is prime Alves is one of a kind. No player in the world right now can play like he did, not even current Alves.

Alba is not an attacking fullback for us. Alba is very conservative in his approach. Check the games with Man. City, he barely came out of his own half, unlike Alves who scored two goals in that tie.

There is no such thing as one of a kind, that's just nostalgia speaking. And even prime Alves had weaknesses in defence. Cuadrado could very well be the next Alves in the right hands and with the right attitude.

The thing some people don't understand is that any fullback can be a defensive fullback; if they couldn't defend, they would just be wingers, like Bale. However, not every fullback can be an attacker, because that requires a skillset not all fullbacks have. Dani, Alba, Marcelo, they all could play defensive fullback, but because they have that attacking skillset their managers ask them to go forward. We don't need to buy a defensive RB, if Lucho wants Dani to attack less he'll just tell him to attack less, it's not rocket science. About Cuadrado, I haven't personally watched him so I can't make judgment calls, but I don't want to buy him just for his attacking abilities, in my opinion he still needs to be able to defend even if he spends most of his time not doing so.

Thats because he was instructed to as Tata knew that Alves cant defend and Alba is much better at defending. But i cant expect an Alves fanboy like you to understand.

Look at Alba with Spain. We bought him due to his attacking abilities not due to his defensive prowess.

@Semi-Neutral. Yea, I agree. Except the fact that being a good defensive fullback is about covering your area, about being there, in the trenches so to speak. So, if you are fast and you can run a lot to cover ground as fast as you can, few players will try to dribble through you. Alves is an excellent defensive fullback when he's there. And that's where he has declined the most, he just isn't there as much as he was in his prime.

If Alves can't defend, how come there are many videos on youtube with him owning Ronaldo? He can defend allright, it's just that he has to be there to do that. He can't defend from 50m away from his defensive position.

If Alves stays, Enrique should tell him to stay in defense more often.

Alba was instructed to be conservative. Once alves leaves I fully hope Alba becomes more offensive as he was last season and for Spain. He's great there and links up well with Iniesta and Neymar.
