Mats Hummels

To be honest, BVB just absolutely sucks at selling key players. Kagawa and Sahin went for a joke of a fee, Götze had a release clause that didn*t put anyone off, no fee at all for Lewa, and now Hummels goes for what, 30m? If your pricing is that much of a joke, then it's no surprise that you would constantly get raided for your players.

Well, I'd say out of the bunch only Sahin was sold for too low, which was 10m at the time when his market value was around 20m and he was red hot back in the 10-11 season. Perhaps it was near the end of his contract?

Kagawa was sold for 16m to Manchester United in 2012 when BVB got him for free 2 years ago. Keep in mind he is Asian, Asian players don't typically generate a high transfer fee (I think the highest so far is Son Heung-min when he was sold by Leverkusen for 30m to Tottenham Hotspurs last year).

Goetze, well, his release clause of 37m back then was a lot of money for a young player. Could BVB have set it higher? Perhaps, but Goetze himself might have said no to a higher release clause so the blame is not completely on BVB.

Lewandowski could have been sold for some money when he wanted to leave for Bayern in summer 2013 when he had just one year left in his contract with BVB. Still mad at Bayern for luring Goetze away, trying not to cave in to Bayern, BVB rather fortfeited the transfer fee (it would not have been that much anyway) in order to keep him for one more season. Sure money-wise BVB lost out but taking such a stand against Bayern did win many applauses from a lot of BVB supporters.

Now Hummels. The reported fee is around 36-38m, as many have alluded to, considering he has clearly indicated that he wanted to go to Bayern and he only has one year left in his contract, that's as much as BVB can get.

Kagawa & Sahin had one year left in their contract too IIRC .
And that is actually the problem with BVB , next season alone 3 of their top players would have their last year of contract .Gundogan ,Hummels & Mkhitaryan .
They need to do better business with their own player . they keep waiting till last second for renewal talks . those player should have sold or renewed 2 years b4 there contracts is over

Or maybe they should just take one for the team, sell maybe Aubameyang for one of those crazily high rumored fees at a point where their contract isn't running out next year, use the money for contract renewals and wage upgrades. Sacrifice one and save the others. Don't always muddle through and play the no-selling club gimmick until you find yourself in another "sell now for low OR keep 1 year and release for free" situations.

In the case of Gundogan, when he signed contract extension last year he only wanted to extend it for one year and that was totally on him, of course BVB had wanted longer terms. Ironically he got injured again this time around and BVB came out and said they welcome him to extend but it must be a longer term contract.

As to Mkhitaryan, if I am not mistaken BVB started the contract talks a while ago but they have been stalled by Mkhitaryan's side. Chances are there are other teams willing to pay more and BVB is fighting to keep him. It all comes down to money which BVB doesn't have much of.

Lucky me, two teams that I really love are all short of money. Story of my life.

You just don't sell your best player at their prime as a top club.

He isn't their best player. But as long as other clubs think that, they will make it rain. The resulting fee would help keeping their actual best players.

Whether Obameyang is their best player or not aside, he is certainly one of their top players and if they sell him for the sake of maximizing profit while he is still banging in a lot of goals for them, what kind of message does it send out to the world? And what does it say about BVB?

The risk is just too high.

Maybe that's the problem, they are too bothered with what others think of them. In my opinion this is better than being regarded as the club that sells 1-2 key players each season. Whatever they do, they need to up wages. If they want top flight football for a long time, then they need money. Wether they sell Auba or get it elsewhere (no CL price money from this season for them). In my opinion BVB is in need to transform from a temporary big club to a consecutively big club, which involves having luck and a plan of what to do.

German clubs, outside Bayern, arent looking to become big clubs. Their objective is to devolop players which they can feed Bayern with, in order to make Bayern as strong as possible, if they can have a good season or two on the side thats a bonus. Its commonly accepted in Germany that Bayern is the king on the hill, and no one should mess with the hierarcy. Bayern abuses this situation of course, and act like they own the league, which they do. All the more fun when they get taught a lesson, year after year, that things doesnt work that way outside of their little kingdom(Spanish clubs knocking them out).

No problem. You cant deny that there is a real defeatist-mentality in Germany, even Dortmund accept being bitched around by Bayern. They dont seem to mind at all, they just accept that Bayern is the top dog, its just the way it is so it must always be so.

Sure, I'm not a massive fan of your favourite team either.
