Mats Hummels

Exactly, Barcelonista and Estranged.

That said Zanela has a valid point that could become a worry if we sign him - which looks unlikely right now.

In the vast majority of the games for both Dortmund and Germany he is rarely exposed when playing in a high-line defence due to Dortmund's style and the fact that Germany are rarely as exposed as we saw today.

The main problem today was the inability of Badstuber and Lahm to keep Germany's defensive line in check. I mean Italy's second goal came after absolutely shocking defending from both Lahm and Badstuber. Boateng were not and never was a world class defender either. Especially not when playing in a high-line defence.

Overall Hummels had a very good if not a great tournament. The talent, potential and the basics are already there. Sure, he lacks the experience etc. but that will come with time.

Nothing has changed for me in that regard. I still see him as the best suited central defender for us together with Thiago Silva and to an extent Javi Martínez and Sakho.

Firstly Low and secondly the Bayern players are too blame. Low's tactics were crap-I think he just wanted to blow Italy off the park and have a manita-dumb-plain stupid. Out off all the playing nations Italy probably have the most savy and tactical know how.

Secondly these same German players seem mentally fragile. Bottle it in big games.

Hummels still has the talent but I am sure Barca will go for Martinez.

Low should've played Hummels - Mertesacker. Badstuber didn't help him in dealing with aerial threats, and Balotelli was barely challenged in the box.

Of course he could. Germany averages just above 50 % possession. Barca averages 70+ with infinitely more competent midfielders infront of him and a whole team that knows how to compress and expand the size of the pitch as a unit. If Pique can play in a high line Hummels can do it as well. The high line didn't expose him at all by the way. He just lost a 1 on 1 duel against a very clever Cassano and after going down 0-2 the moral went down + Germany threw everyone forward which left Hummels even more exposed at the back.

Löw is the only one to blame for today's showing.

Easy. It was only in response to Estranged's post earlier which looked(to me) like he was blaming the high-line for Hummel's poor showing. And i really've not studied mats game enough to 've a definitive opinion (unlike you football gurus). I didn't even watch the full match tonite.

I only accounted for the possession aspect only after i made the post, so you've a point there. But Piqué is only able to play a high-line because he has/had tenacious CBs for partners (Masch, Puyol, Ramos), and excellent game reader in Márquez, he'd be a lot more exposed without experience, and recovery pace beside him. Not sure how Hummels (who doesn't bring anything diff) 'd compliment Piqué.

perhaps I should have been more articulate with that, I just found it annoying how all of a sudden after a bad game (the whole system around him was flawed) everybody was waiting to come out and have a dig at him, especially all these retarded commentators. it wasn't really a high line, it was just the German defense being under instruction to go full on attack as if Low had no idea Italy actually planned to win the game too. Any defender will look like a Sunday league player if you don't utilise him well at this level. Anyways, he's sill great. Can play with his feet, is feisty and reads the game well. Maybe a bit slow, but barca should seriously consider signing either him or javi martinez :D

I find it funny that he has one bad game and everyone is digging at him now. He had a good tournament run. That's enough to go after him. No one is perfect after all. And his price won't go up now

Didn't you blame Xavi during the game against Portugal ,you said that he is finished,if blaming one of the greatest midfielders of all time because he has a bad season is fair then I guess blaming Hummels after he had a bad game is fair.

I never commented on the second goal. Even though he was nowhere to be seen there.

he went for the offside trap,
Actually he was in the opponents box, which is quite usual for CDs on corners. Schweinsteiger was the one going for the trap.

And he didnt look good on the challenge on Cassono prior to the 1st goal. But it was 1st Özils fault of not pressing Pirlo, then Boatengs fault at not moving out to the open flank or towards Cassano first. Hummels actually took over for Boateng and if the latter assisted Hummels better there, Hummels didnt have to solely challenge Cassano in the first place.

Cassano was schooling him all night long! He had a really bad game last night.
But I still like him.. maybe now he'll be cheaper :p

I agree. Even though he was poor on the first goal, it was more of a system failure from Germany's part and Ozil, Boateng, Hummels and Badstuber all played their part.

This is a key point... Carlos Bianchi, a football mastermind, highlighted it during the broadcast... It was a chain of minor individual mistakes that created one huge collective disaster...
