A few years ago, players would die to move to Barcelona and offer a pay cut to join us because of the way we play football and how we go and challenge the biggest trophies.
When did this ever happened? Who did it?
I mean looking to our transfers year by year:
2018: Malcom? no, Vidal? no, Arthur? no, Lenglet? still no. Coutinho? Hell no
2017: Dembele? lol, he got huge pay raise, Paulinho,Semedo,Deulofeu? again, no
2016: Gomes, Paco,Digne,Denis all didn't sacrifice any money to join here, same with Umtiti . Pogba turned us down because of money.
2015:Arda & Vidal? lol
2014: Bravo,MATS,Suarez & Raki all got significant pay rise, Mathieu sacrificed 3M to join us on paper, but he was still getting paid better than he was on Valencia, no other club was interested than him
2013: Neymar, hell no. He milked us along his dad, and that is the main reason this man joined us.
2012: Song & Alba, again hell no. OTOH T.Silva gave us the middle finger when we refused to make him 2nd best paid player after Messi (over Xavi & Iniesta) , which blatantly contradict your statement.
2011: Cesc & Alexis got huge pay raise, no other club was offering them more money. so again, no.
2010: Mascherano? Keita & Villa? again, all with increased salaries, better city (in case of Mascherano)
2009: Neither Ibra or Chygrynskiy took pay cuts
2008: Hleb,Caceras,Pique, Alves etc were all paid well. Not 100% sure Pique was offered more than Manu tbf.
2007: Again, none of Yaya,Henry,Abidal Milito took pay cuts, OTOH Cristian Chivu turned us down because we offered lower wage.
2006: Thuram & Zambrotta were aging players in a relegated club, we came with biggest offer. GG was also well paid.
The only time I remember players taking pay cuts was in 2003 when Laporta told them either take less or leave, and the likes of Kluivert and Puyol accepted that.
May be I am missing something here, but I don't remember a real possibility for a player to take more money elsewhere and turned it down for us, at most he accepted less than what he wanted, but was a still the most he can get. On contrary there are cases of players turning us down for money or milking us like Ibra & Neymar etc.
Overwhelming majority of players has been choosing money over anything else for half century, they try to sugarcoat it but it is the truth. I won't blame them since asking someone who is one of the best in his trade to take pay cut so a multi-billion institution benefit more from him is silly anyway.
