In terms of quality Benatia may be on a different level from M/V, and had we signed him not only would we have got a WC CB, but we would've spared ourselves the need and the expense to go shopping for another CB in 2 years time to replace Mathieu; so why didn't we sign him? For the same reason that Mascherano won't be replacing Busquets any time soon as our sole DM. The reason is this: Masch may be as good a DM as Busquets, but Busquets is such a perfect fit for our philosophy and style of play that it's almost unthinkable to play Masch ahead of Busquets if both are fit and on form; even though If this was another team (e.g. Chelsea) Busquets would be the one sitting on the bench if they were competing for the same place.
So it's not enough to buy a WC CB, a long term solution to our CB problem needs to be a player who not only is WC (or at least has the potential to be) but is also an excellent fit for us. That's why we went after TS & Marcos (foolishly perhaps after they were no longer available), but that's why they were our preferred targets, and when we couldn't find anyone available who had both of these attributes we opted for our 2nd best option: a short-term solution –*i.e. players who may be lacking in quality but are an excellent fit for us.
Given how much influence Lucho was given in dictating transfers, had he wanted Benatia he probably would've been wearing a Barca shirt by now. The fact that he isn't, IMO was the right decision.
