You want to see Neymar at his best, take a look at his game against Celtic which was his best game this season by a mile. He kept it somewhat simple and there was a balance between his dribbles and his passes. He didn't dribble more than two guys before passing, and all of his passes and crosses had purpose behind them. How often do you see this in his current games? Now he tries to go FIFA on the enemy team and doesn't stop until he gets fouled or loses the ball, and often it looks like he just makes a risky pass for the sake of it. Yes, sometimes those fouls end up in Messi scoring, and sometimes it’s a nice way to bring the ball forward or force some cards. More often than not however, it just disrupts the flow of the game or gives possession to the enemy team.
Even if Neymar scored all of his goals, he could be so much better. At his best, like against Celtic, he makes passes and crosses that anyone and not just Messi can score from, and his decision making is much better in terms of knowing when to dribble and hold the ball and what the team gains from it. That is the Neymar I expect to see at least half the time. This season he has only played like that, or anything close to that, maybe three times.
And finally, some here say he is a key playmaker, but is he really? When he messes up 70 % of his attempts to create something, and most of them could’ve been avoided if he used his head or made a simple pass instead, he is not a great playmaker in my book. However, he will still look like a great playmaker due to his assist count, which is ironic, since some people who defend him refuse to acknowledge goal scoring as a significant problem of his. I want Neymar to succeed and he has the talent, but most of his games are not at an acceptable level according to the supposed standard set for him.
