Stop trying to rationalize his transfer. The guy left Barcelona for fucking PSG in Ligue 1. MSN and BBC era La Liga for PSG...LOL

If he wanted a higher status as a player he should've left for a premier league club.

Dude wanted money and a club to cater to his every need to sate his ego. That's it. He had no football ambitions, if he did he wouldnt have left for PSG. Simple as.

damn lapla youre a bit too harsh on Ney, i think he really wanted to be the superstar of a team (+ big money of course) and he saw his chance at PSG. I agree he should have gone to PL club as playing in a clown ligue like ligue1 makes your head ill

You say that as it was a bad thing for Neymar and Barca lol. If Russian and Middle Eastern oil money never flooded the game like it has in recent history, Neymar would have stayed and help break more records here.

His football career ended when he left Barca, like ManYoo he is merely a commercial entity rather than a sporting one

None of us know what it's like to be in that position, but wouldn't you prefer to play with your best friends at one of the biggest clubs, with the GOAT and other greatest players?
In addition, you can break so many records (potentially reach Balon d'Or), win many trophies (likely another treble) and be admired (people cared much less about his diving when he played in the threesome).

Depends on the individual.

If you are a megalomaniac or have a big ego then you'd wanna be a star and compete for the top individual prizes in the game. Nothing wrong with that at all. They are big ambitions and admirable in its own way.

If you don't really care about those things and see it as a Team Sport and just won to win trophies with the club and enjoy your life then its different. Nothing wrong with that either.

Both these school-of-thought players are filthy rich and successful. But it can have slight effects on your legacy. The main man is ALWAYS more remembered in history than the second fiddle.

Personally, if I was at that situation as a world class player, I would have signed a 3 or 4 year deal with Barca coming from Santos. And if I saw I was way too expensive for Football clubs other than PSG, what I would do is I'd run my contract down with Barca as a thorough professional and leave on a free. Many clubs would love to have me then and I'd get "my team" stepping out of Messi's shadow. Will need a Zahavi/Mendes level agent though to play the contract games.

The thing is he had more prestige and coverage when he was still here, because he was in a league and team that matters.

No one cares about PSG and Ligue 1, consequently he only made the headlines 3 times a year during the KO CL stages at best.

Yeah. That's why I mentioned that he chose the wrong club and a terrible league.

You say that like it's something bad  Dude should've just stayed at Barca. Maybe would've even won an extra CL by now then, but sure as hell wouldn't have won any less than with PSG. While continuing to play in the way better league for the bigger club.

Plus growing into the role of Messi's heir.

I don't think he'd decline as much at Barca as his motivation would've been higher. 30 years and would've been the absolute star of the club now.

He'd had better chance at it with Messi and the crew than with sheik and merry bunch of farmers. Messi would be benevolent enough to take the assist merchant role and allow Sneyk to take top glory, while getting more major trophies under his belt thanks to that.
