They did not trigger his release clause with league but by letter to Barca which is in writing in his contract can be done.

It is all fairly simple really.

So this "private clause" was inserted into Dembele's contract last summer that another club can just send a letter and by doing so he can be bought for 50m, with similar but more favorable terms for the buying club?

If true, there must be some true idiots running the club.

Yes that what is being reported but no nothing about 'favourable terms' for buying club any more so than favourable for Barca.

Lets see if they are 'true idiots' and they get less than the 25m they would if clause had been activated.

No he was 100% wrong.

Barca had their best wide player for a season and a half and made 25m+ of a fee from it.

There is no scenario at all it would have been better for him to be sent to stands then left on a free.

Xavi was correct.

Alemany/Laporta with their posturing did nothing but make situation worse.

Barca didn't make 25m fee from him, it was his salary in the meantime. We could say he played for free for a season and a half if we get 25m from PSG now (and it looks it will be 25 mil and nothing more). Will we even be able to register Gundo, Inigo and Oriol with that money?

If true, it's just a way of having the existing buyout clause not go through LaLiga.

Maybe more clubs have this in contracts to be fair. Not really a big issue as it coincides with the buyout value.

They make 25m+ this summer after he is there on lower wages than would expect.

No player plays for free and he was on nowhere near 25m either.

They would have been paying him to not even play for 5/6 months if some folk got their way so that is even more dead money then no fee.

I meant we probably paid him around 25 mil for last season and now we are getting that money back. Of course he got paid the salary and PSG will pay us the transfer fee but in the end it cost Barca around 0€ that Dembele played the 22/23 season with us.

No chance he was on 25m a season and in his place would be someone else paying salary to anyway.

He was paid for what he did on park and then made 25m after that was done.

Much better than paying him not to play for 5/6 months then leaves for free.

We are talking brutto right? Maybe not 25 but 18-20 for sure, with hidden bonuses or deffered payments from before it could go to 25m, it wouldn't surprise me. Maybe we made a small surplus of 3-4 mil, not more.

Yes gross and not near that.

Folk were crowing about the contract Barca got him on a year ago.

Even if was.. a season with Dembele for free is far better than not having best wide player at all anyway and the club believed it was a chance to then keep him longer if worked out.

Absolutely correct decision at that point.

Agreed if the release clause is set for something like 500m or 1 billion etc. which is very unlikely to be triggered, having this sort of "private clause" in the contract doesn't hurt much.

However in Dembele's case, it is stupid to have it because it evades the formal process of the release clause (which seems to be a cumbersome process for clubs to go through) and makes it easier for the buying club to trigger it "informally". In the end perhaps we will get a few millions more than 25m than we would have received if the release clause had been properly and formally triggered, but it still sucks in that it made PSG much easier to buy Dembele, because all it needed was sending a friggin' letter.

Last season he was injured ONCE AGAIN during the most important part of the season. We won La Liga basically without him. Additionally, during his time here he had ONE good half of the season and that was during the spring of 2022. Everything except that was horrible. Furthermore if we hadn't renewed him he would have never ended in PSG because in that time actually no one wanted him. Xavi raised him from dead. When you consider his salary and the amount we'll get for him now, it's probably still a loss for us.

It is no easier or harder for PSG. They could easily have lodged the amount with the league.

If PSG had to pay release clause to league they would have.
