Congrats to Madrid for the Supercup but tbh I'd be extremely surprised if they didn't win it. This match had 0 indication of that system being effective.
The experienced and dominant European heavyweights always start out the season miles above smaller clubs, riding on the momentum of success and the ability of their players. Tactical organization and unity mean squat as of now since it's just fitness and star power that makes a difference. For example:
In 12/13 we started off the season beating Real Sociedad 5-1 but in the next round they ended up handing us our first loss of the league season. Same for this year where we pummeled Levante 7-0 at first but then we simply couldn't break them down in January. Those initial results are nothing to be proud of because it just indicates that the team is going without an active positive change (which looks great at first because that's what they're used to, but then the holes begin to show as things go on). It's why Tito and Tata were able to get us our best ever starts to the league seasons just by riding on the momentum of our players' abilities and chemistry.
Not to mention that this Sevilla side specifically are pretty much rubbish on the defensive end, having conceded twice the amount of goals as Atletico Madrid last year (52) and just 2 short of Luis Enrique's Celta Vigo side. This was further exacerbated by them missing M'bia and Rakitic. Madrid didn't have to face any pressing or a compact defensive structure which can really expose the flaws in their midfield.
The only time that world class club sides struggle early on in the season is if they are going complete renovations both managerially and in the squad (like us now, Atletico probably as well). Unlike Madrid, we don't have a lot of the elements that exist from before already clicking. We need to get our completely new setup to do so. Of course our core remains strong (Messi, Iniesta, Busi) but we have big adjustments to make.
