Real Madrid’s plans to redevelop Bernabéu blocked by city court

• 2012 redevelopment agreement annulled by Madrid court
• Club say they will work with council to make project viable
• Bernabéu stadium set to be renamed Abu Dhabi Bernabéu

Real Madrid’s £260m plans to redevelop the Bernabéu have been dealt a major blow after the city’s supreme court of justice ruled that work on the project should be halted with immediate effect.

“Madrid’s Supreme Court of Justice has annulled the agreement of November 15, 2012 issued by the Governing Council of the Municipal Community of Madrid, which approved the modification of land-use plan related to the Santiago Bernabéu,” read a Real Madrid statement.

“Following this ruling, Real Madrid will work with the City Council and the Community of Madrid in resolving those aspects that are necessary to make the redevelopment of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium viable.”

The redevelopment work included a shopping centre being incorporated into the complex as well as a hotel and a retractable roof on the stadium.

Last week the Spanish sports newspaper AS reported that the Bernabéu would be renamed the Abu Dhabi Bernabéu. Real Madrid’s president, Florentino Pérez, was caught on camera admitting to a member of the regional government that the stadium will be called whatever the Abu Dhabi investment group Ipic wants it to be called.

'What will need to change is the stadium’s foot-print. The renovation will require the stadium to expand outwards and Perez thought that this issue was resolved as long ago as 1998.

Back then, a strip of land next to the stadium known as Las Tablas, passed into the ownership of the club as part of a deal to settle debts with the city council. However in 2011, it became apparent that the council had no right to cede this public land. The Communidad de Madrid Governing Council verified the decision in 2012, only for the High Court of Madrid to overturn the decision in February 2015. Ultimately, it will be the European Commission that decides if the deal is legitimate. However, if they do not find in the club & council’s favour, then the proposed renovation will be have to be scrapped. Under Spanish law, public land can only be exchanged for public land, and despite all of Real Madrid’s bargaining power, they don’t have that ace up their sleeve.'

Looks like they may yet end up building a brand new stadium elsewhere, by the training ground I would imagine.

What does this mean? because if I understand it correctly all what RM has to do is give them another area in exchange for the area they want

Surely RM don't have any public land to exchange. Otherwise it wouldn't be public if RM owns it.

Real Madrid stars James Rodriguez and Sami Khedira reportedly will be fined after attending Cristiano Ronaldo's birthday celebration following Los Blancos' 4-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

As reported by Spanish publication Cuatro, the pair face financial reprimand "after ignoring medical advice" from the club's doctors.

LEL. Circus Madrid is really funny.

Wait. Is this true?

Cant see us dropping points this weekend no matter what form we are in, Deportivo is awful tbh.

Yeah should be an easy 5/6-0 victory. Your schedule is relatively easy towards el classico. I hope rm drop points in one of the following games:
Elche away
Villarreal at home
Bilbao away.

Villarreal won't be able to field Denis Cheryshev since he is a Real Madrid player loaned to them. They were our best bet to have Real drop points imo. The rest are a mess or too weak to do something unless something drastic happens at Real.

Ideally this would have been the absolute best week for RM to drop points. Unfortunately, they face a scrub like Deportivo. Pepe is back this week and a partnership with him and Varane is much better than anything else they can field imo. Modric should be back around the Villarreal game. Same with Khedira. B El Clasico, Ramos will be back. Then their squad will be refreshed for the last 2 months of La Liga.

Villarreal's defense is really good. If RM are still in fatigue there's a great possibility for them to slip up there.
