Most CBs didn't start playing so young at that level, should be a warning for our kids who started even earlier than him.

Crazy how his top level was in those first seasons at RM at a very young age. Fair play to RM, tho. Another player they sold at the exact right time. 50M just three years ago. FloPer shipping him and Casemiro off for all that money to United is something you just got to respect.

He is probably one of the most accomplished wasted potential in football.
He had an amazing career, but man o man, the expectations for him and his talent was way more.

...won a world cup and a second position in the next, 4 champions league, several league titles, numerous club world cups, a few eurpoean super cups, some spanish super copas, Copa del reys and various individual awards......while playing for top clubs....

bro, we need to redefine "waste" again.

there are so many examples of "unwasted" accomplishers who will drool at his achievements.

One liner foul language posts are being deleted. And again, it's not so much about calling a player cunt as it's about combination of that plus nothing else in the post. Mods are deleting same stuff from newbies, and much to older members demand, so we expect the latter to live up to same standards.Thanx
He’s a cunt

He was just lucky to play with far better players than himself. Good player of course but you could have replaced him with several better CBs at Real Madrid and they wouldn't have lost a step. He wasn't integral to their success. Van Dijk is easily better than him yet people who judge by trophies will point to Varane's bigger cabinet as justification for him being better lol, it's laughable.

Individual awards are a popularity contest and you have to be a donkey to not win any while playing for Real Madrid and benefiting from Perez's PR system.

He played for one top club really - Real Madrid. Man United have been an abomination for years so the fact he played for them highlights his early decline. He certainly didn't help improve their situation and didn't pull up any trees there. Giving him credit for playing for Man United is like those people who give Beckham credit for playing for Real Madrid and Milan - the former got worse when they signed Beckham and sold Makelele, and the latter were totally unsuccessful at that time precisely because they signed geriatrics like Beckham. Playing for a faded top club is evidence of nothing.

I will give him the 2018 World Cup though where he was great. He was a disaster for France in other tournaments, though.

He's the very definition of a player who gets a boost in reputation because of what he's won rather than due to his actual ability. You're even doing the same - yeah you're replying to a lad who called him a waste (relatively speaking, you even misunderstood his point), but you never mentioned what attributes he has or what he was good at - you just reeled off what he's won, usually through being carried by much better players than himself.

Bro, I don't even rate him so highly but to label his career as "wasted" with all he accomplished, whether as a team or an individual is something i disagree with, completely. There are some of those you regard as having had a better or more accomplished career than him that would rather give up all they had for a fraction of his accomplishments.

With those accolades and individual awards, dont you think someone like Baresi, Costacuta, Maldini, Koeman, Kahn, and so many would have given up some of their so called "illustriousness" for a pie of the world cup and some more other champions league?

For context, would you rate someone like Cannavaro ahead of him in any ramification?

Yeah I agree, I never said his career was wasted - he won a lot. I am more talking about his place in the CB pantheon. He definitely did the best with his talent.

Yeah those players sometimes won less but were clearly far better defenders than Varane mate, for me at least (though Kahn was a goalkeeper). I would say Cannavaro was easliy more talented than Varane, yes. Didn't win as much though, granted.

Anyway wasn't having a go or anything, was just putting out some thoughts on Varane. You're right that he won a lot and made the most of his talent. Injuries fucked him towards the end of his career especially. But in the end I don't see him as an all-time great defender and going by what you say it seems you don't either.
