Samuel Umtiti

His performance was a bit of a mixed bag for me.
On the ball he was excellent. Looked confident and his distribution was very good.
But on a couple of Sevilla attacks his positioning was lacking .. but as this was his first match I guess this will improve a lot.

Yeah, I find it strange that some people already, based on what is pretty much one match, come to a conclusion that he is weak aerially. If you watch the Euros and watch Lyon matches, you'd see he has good jumping ability and positioning. Every player, no matter how good, has some matches where they lose duels. Pique, Mascherano, Umtiti. That's normal. Add the fact that it was his first start for a new club, and I don't think it's fair to conclude that he is weak aerially. I need more than a few incidents in one first start to make such judgement.

Apart from the penalty, which in it of itself is typically a very troubling issue for a defender, I thought he was superb for his first start at Barcelona. It's clear that apart from Digne, all the newbies were cautious in their approach - a palpable sense that no one wanted to push too much or assert themselves as protagnists...until Umititi made that run in the 2nd half

The penalty was amateurish from him, frankly disturbing when you think about it - I can't recall penalties being given away like that by Barcelona, never that blatant. Not sure who he was trying to fool there but perhaps in Ligue1 this happens more often. But I am sure the coaching staff & teammates will impress to him the need to never put himself in a position to be penalised, especially so blatantly.

That being said, he looked confident and as a central defender it's an important role at Barcelona. Moreover, his defensive stops & interceptions were just about flawless. The rest will come, I feel. But the early feeling is, wow - really happy he's at Barcelona

Have a feeling he is going to be a special player. So good on the ball and with his passing. He dominated his opponents/duels on the ground and in the air, but he also know when to back off a little. Also love his calm yet focused demeanor. He had one run at the end of the match where he lost the ball, but otherwise he did really well as Pique's partner.
I can't wait to see how he develops.
