Well the thing is, he hasn't had much opportunity. His only really glaring mistake was Grimaldo, but much like Aleix Vidal, he pissed the boss off too much to have any chance here.

Grimaldo a mistake?
So, he didn't play here because he pissed Lucho?

But then, why isn't he playing at Benfica?
Either he pissed their coach also, or he is not nowhere good enough.
That means that Lucho didn't make a mistake about Grimaldo, but Barcaforum.

Grimaldo's career at Benfica, from Wikipedia:
"Grimaldo played his first game with his new team on 26 January 2016, coming in as a 62nd-minute substitute for Sílvio in a 6–1 away routing of Moreirense for the Taça da Liga.[9] On 29 February, he debuted in the Primeira Liga, featuring the full 90 minutes in a 2–0 home win against União da Madeira;[10] he only appeared once more in the latter competition until the end of the season, filling in for suspended Eliseu[11] in a 4–1 success over Nacional also at the Estádio da Luz that sealed the club's third consecutive national championship."

So, maybe Lucho isn't actually making mistakes with youngsters, but people just see too much in current youngsters.

Not that I lament the loss of Grimaldo, as I'm sure Lucho had his reasons for not counting on him (whether professional, personal or sporting), but you clearly haven't followed the kid's progress in Benfica or how the fans perceive him. Last season was about acclimaticizing. He showed plenty promise when he played, and the fans have no doubt that he'll oust Eliseu from the starting XI from the coming season.

It's well known he refused to accept a loan Lucho wanted him to go on. It's not too much of a leap to think that made Lucho give up on him as a prospect.

And you can't really determine Grimaldo was a flop at Benfica based on a wikipedia article written on a 5 month spell at a new club in a new country. From everything I've heard from Benfica fans he's actually quite loved and many want him to get more minutes.

Grimaldo had a year left and Lucho wanted him to join Levante on loan, the rivals of Valencia. A bit unreasonable and understandable from Grimaldo's side to reject that, however I guess it could've been solved, but both were too stubborn so it never happened.

La Masia has become a joke which is why we're now signing the likes of Digne, D.Suarez, Umititi and going for Vietto to inject some youth into the squad because there's nothing coming through.

Sandro & Munir can't be really looked as developing players, they were thrust into difficult positions far too early - they were victims of a board that failed to integrate attacking wide players in the cantera that were further along than both

Rafinha was able to play with the first team and then lead a Primera side, under Lucho, at Celta Vigo. Does not equate to integrating a youth player into the first team, easy mistake to make

Roberto's debut was 6 years ago, under Pep. Lucho gets credit for getting him to make the most of his limited minutes but that doesn't equate to developing a cantera player either

Gumbau you could argue is a Lucho project that could qualify as a developing talent, if he actually developed

Lucho's approach thus far is to employ youth players a bit like Mou might, only if they can provide immediate returns - that's not developing, that's capitalizing on a player already ready to contribute

What does Lucho have to do with it? Lucho didn't count on him in pre-season and the board (Roberto and those responsible for Barca B ) told him to move on loan,Levante was the best offerbut he rejected it,rejected renewal and it was clear he made his decision to move out.
Lucho job is decide which Cantera he use,not where he goes on loan or if he is sold.Only in case if it is about a club he really knows like Sporting.

Grimaldo came through the youth cantera not unlike Xavi, Samper et al yet the kid never got a first team chance. That's failing to develop your own youth talent and only logical that a player would feel betrayal, even said as much about Lucho himself

Hi, its me..
FC Barcelona and Sergi Samper have reached an agreement to extend the deal of the young midfielder for an additional three years, until 30 June 2019, with the option of an additional year.

The minimum fee release clause has been set to 50 million euros.

The signing of the contract will take place on Tuesday 19 July at 1.30pm CET at the club offices which will be immediately followed by a photo session.

Let's not fool ourselves, I think Lucho isn't kind of coaches who has ability to develop youth players ( shouldn't be mistaken with givin' them time to play), he's better in controlling situations and manage stuffs like a boss ( similar to Ancelotti or Mou , they've rarely developed a youth player )

Hopefully he impresses during pre-season, and stays.

It's impressive how you guys can dissect Lucho's knack for developing talent after 2 seasons and a handful of less than stellar youth players at his disposal.
