The Negreira case

It is not a defence at all which is why it is unlikely they will go down that road and would result in the club being in big trouble.

Of course they will not go down that road by default, since there are far more convenient methods to tackle this. But even if it gets there, I like our chances personally.

It wont fly at all that excuse and is just an admission they paid to influence referees rather than reject the proposal and expose the corruption in La Liga.

They have no chance of getting away with anything if gets to stage of them admitting it for whatever reason. At that point it would be trying to save face in a situation club is trying to play victim when damage already done.

Something Porque said the other day is extremely relevant and a good observation - There is no way, through so many different presidents and through so many financial audits, that this service would have lasted all the way to 2018 (when he lost his position) if it wasn't deemed important.

The only way we go down on this is if we paid the refs to fix games in our favor. Which is next to impossible.

Doesnt have to be fixing games but any payment trying to influence the officials from who is officiating the games to decisions in games club would get hammered.

As said they will most likely try to say little and leave it on other side to prove they tried to imfluence things and will stay well away from 'we had to pay to influence officiating to be fair' as would be done if claim that.

It's been said. The club was most likely blackmailed to keep paying or else Negreira would turn it into a scandal. We stopped and voila, here's the scandal.

That is another argument against this idea club was being blackmailed as he would still have all the knowledge to bring down club even after left in 2018.

The fact they stopped paying then shows club were not being forced into paying him.

Five years later and not exposed by the guy who is now ill.

So that argument does not add up.

The club stopped paying him in 2018. There is nothing then to stop the threat of blackmail.

You make no logic at all.

Blackmail is the action, treated as a criminal offence, of demanding payment or another benefit from someone in return for not revealing compromising or damaging information about them.

If Negreira threatened the club that if we don't pay him he will reveal damaging information about the club, it's blackmail.

No you 'make no logic'.

There is nothing that changes in 2018 in terms of 'blackmail'.

They stopped paying him in 2018.

They will argue they paid him to ensure all was fair and that was in relation to monitoring and not influencing referee decisions... If anyone thinks it was corruption they will say 'prove it'.

If they were being blackmailed then there is nothing that changes in 2018 on that front.

What was the threat he was making in your opinion?

Marca. The Negreira case: this is just the beginning, and only the investigation can last up to five years! The first complaint was lodged with the Inland Revenue in Q2 2019 regarding tax returns that the club submitted between 2015 and 2018. Judge Estrada Fern?ndez filed the first complaint with the Barcelona Court of Instruction No. 1.The Negreira case has been pending since 2019, the current LaLiga VAR referee accuses Henriquez of being "the author of the crime of sports corruption or sports fraud." In the "Facts and Fundamentals of Law" of the complaint, Estrada Fernandez, through his lawyer, says that "the defendants acted with the clear desire for profit and with the clear intention of influencing the decisions of the arbitration to ensure that they do not harm the Barcelona Football Club"
Estrada argues that the facts denounce "an attack on the purity of professional football in Spain, on the good name of referees, and on the honesty and integrity that professional football referees should govern."

So what?

In 2018 they decided to bite the bullet. Barca were not forced to pay him, but they did to keep the scandal quiet. Fairly simple and logical.

Why stop paying him if they had until that point had no option as being 'blackmailed'?

Fairly simple and logical... they were not under threat of blackmail in way you make out when decided to stop paying him.

Just decided to 'bite the bullet' for no real reason and test waters to see if they were wrong to pay money all these years due to blackmail?

Makes no sense.

They always had options. Like in 2018. Stop paying him and let him make it public. That doesn't mean it wasn't blackmail. Blackmail is what Negreira did, not Barca lol.

No one directly from Barcelona have claimed they paid him for neutrality and I doubt that will be their legal defense either.

El Mundo reported that Rosell and Bartomeu's entourage claimed that they paid him so that it would be fair as they believed Real Madrid were getting a lot of calls from refs. Rosell and Bartomeu themselves did not say it.

What their entourage may or may not claim is irrelevant when everyone involved in this case from Barcelona's side including those two are going to say they paid him for analysis and other shit that they believed was legal and something other teams also did.

Unless the prosecution comes up with concrete evidence of Barca paying Negreira to influence the referees, and they have concrete evidence of Negreira influencing referees, this case will probably come down to tax related offences.

The optics however even if we get away from this is bad.

That said who even fucking knows what will happen the next few weeks and months even.

From Barca's POV they better pray nothing concrete other than this money trail comes through.
