I'd prefer a Spanish defender than Hummels. Like Bilbao's Fernando Amorebieta (Basque) or Sociedad's Inigo Martinez

We are not Spanish national team where everyone has to be Spanish. We are one of the best clubs and we will choose the best from around the world

But why choose someone who can't speak the lingo (i.e. Hummels)? Whereas most of the Barça team can speak Spanish.

If the management think he is a better footballer or suited better to the team then language should never be considered an issue. Players move between countries all the time and learn new languages. You hardly need to be fluent to communicate effectively on the pitch. All you need to do is learn off a few sentences that relate to football and positioning, scream and wave your arms around and you can communicate your message effectively on the pitch.

I can see Hummels getting homesick if he joins

I think especially in defense you need your players to be able to communicate.

Well ye they need to be able to communicate but he can learn the language. And as I said he doesn't need a huge vocabulary to communicate on the football pitch...
" Stay with him", "drop deep", "hold the line", " move up", "behind you", "pay attention Pique for f**k sake".

If a player is good enough then language should never be an issue. If its a choice between two players of similar quality and one speaks Spanish then its a different matter but if the non Spanish speaking player is better then you have to go for him.

This will be the most important line to learn and the one he will use the most:)

Not sure if Hummels is actually "better" than Amorebieta (6'4" nutter) or Martinez (21 year old crack). Also not sure how well Hummels would adapt to life in Barcelona. The only German on the Barça team - he'd be the odd one out.

Actually I think Barça should sign both Fernando Amorebieta and Iñigo Martínez. Probably'd get both for the price of Hummels - two for the price of one. Amorebieta (27) as Puyol's replacement & Martínez (21) as Piqué's "understudy". Defense sorted.

To be honest, I haven't watched enough of him to say that he is but the Barcelona scouts have. If they think he is a better player and better suited then they should go for him. They shouldn't even consider the prospect of him not settling in. He's a big boy and its a beautiful city, he most likely will love the place.

I personally still have reservations about him in pure footballing terms. He is a quality defender from what I have seen of him but he isn't the fastest and is similar style to Pique. If the two of them worked well together they could find a way to prevent their lack of pace being a problem but I do think a fast aggressive centre back would be more ideal.

The one thing you see when hummels plays he never fouls.... in his last 50 games he only got 1yellow card but still he won most of the battles in the bundesliga as a defender that huge... although he can open the game with his crossing

Amorebieta is nowhere near being the calibre of player Barcelona need. Has to be one of the most over rated players in La Liga.

The number of errors he makes in big games is scary and he is a complete liability to a red card.

Inigo Martinez is a good player but surely need another taller center half than that in a team of midgets!

If Barca really go for Neymar (knock on wood that they're not) AND Hummels, it would be financially not feasible.
It would be feasible, but it would mean either they sell some players to raise funds, or they cut their transfer budget for the following season.

Well, I'm sure Barça scouting department has got more players on their watch-list than you or me, so I guess it should/might be feasible to get a man-marking defender of quality on the market...

If so,then why (according to rumors ) they are interested in Hummels and they think he is best fit?I think barca scouts are better than me&you in deciding which player is better fit :D
They already failed to get a Puyol replacement last summer, and decided to go for Song ,and tbh since rossel became a president,I am not sure I like our scouting for our transfers

There was some reports that he actually started learning the language a year ago ,if true then he will probably be able to communicate with team early on ,and will quickly speaks the language fluently

Well, according to rumours today they almost have an agreement with Hummels, tomorrow with Kompany, on Friday with Abdennour, on Saturday & Sunday we'll talk about the game, on Monday however we will have an agreement with Marquinhos, etc... by then, the cycle begins again.

I'm speculating as much as the rest of us, I just hope we go for the right profile of defender. I was responding to those people who seem Hummels the correct fit for us, which i think he isn't...
