Froze on the firs- oh wait. That was Buffon.

That was Buffon, one of the greatest goalkeepers of all-time who has for over a decade been absolute World Class.

This is ter Stegen, a guy who still got significant flaws in his game which he need to iron out. Whether it is by working harder and changing his training regime or goalkeeper coach, it got to be done one way or another.

Which just proves the point that even the best of the best sometimes freeze and watch the ball go in.

And yet, he had numerous saves and didn't concede any goals due to freezing.

Wow, it's almost as if sometimes a shot isn't savable or possible to react to, no matter how good the keeper is...

Buffon has problems lately with Spanish teams, but also bad luck. In CL Final he conceded two goals (Ronaldo & Marcelo) because shots were deflected.
Today Messi's first goal went through the legs of a defender and was perfectly placed. Messi's second goal was impossible to save, the same was true when Messi hit the post. Buffon made a great save of Suarez' shot, after Messi's feeekick.

could have at least make a token effort to try to get to the ball instead of the snowman impression.

Am I doing this right?

Is his height the reason he concedes so many long shots? Or does he just love to freeze?

He places too much emphasis on judging and guessing where the ball will go rather than actually momentally responding to the shot with reflexes. MaTS is not an acrobatic keeper in the sense that he does not pull off hollywood saves. Does not mean they are less impressive though. His near-post arm saves are the best, I think, those and 1v1 saves.

And yet there is a difference between freezing regularly and freezing once in a blue moon! Not to forget freezing on shots close to the box and shots from farther outside.

And so what? I'm not talking about his freezing, but his constant lack of communication with his defence and his poor aerial ability constantly flapping at crosses, mostly trying to punch the ball instead of collecting it.

Are you going to tell me it's not a flaw now? Or are you going to tell me to put my head in the sand? Look through my post history on this thread and how much I've supported this guy.

You can turn a blind eye to the flaws he need to iron out and the areas he need to improve while being a fanboy of his, but I won't.

As for his freezing then the post above nails it and while it may work at times, it's not great for a goalkeeper to premeditate so many shots.

He gets accused of 'freezing' or letting in poor goals in situations other keepers dont.

His ratio of shot stopping is high amongst keepers in league last season I think so he is doing something right.

I think the ratio comes from the mid- and close-range shots which he seems to handle well. But there is still some work left with outside of the box shots and set-pieces. It's weird because he seems to have the reflexes, but then misjudges some shots for going wide.

He makes up for it to a certain extent with his footballing ability and distribution.

Like I said last season, he's the least of our worries and good enough imo. If our defense improves he'll be tested less as well.

What outside of the box shots from last season do you mean?

He concedes very few goals from outside of the box. Most shots that beat him to cause the "freezing" are bullets that come from wide open attackers under no pressure. If he had conceded the goal Buffon conceded and failed to dive in the same way Buffon did this thread would be alight. If a shot comes in that the goalkeeper can't come close to saving more often than not it's the fault of the defense for allowing such a shot. Only at Barca do fans try and blame the goalkeeper for those goals.

And so what? I'm not talking about his freezing, but his constant lack of communication with his defence and his poor aerial ability constantly flapping at crosses, mostly trying to punch the ball instead of collecting it.

Pure rubbish to say he lacks communication with his defense and his poor aerial ability really doesn't have anything to do with his freezing at all. Why are you trying so desperately to derail the conversation of "Buffon froze and isn't getting slaughtered" by bringing up things that have absolutely nothing to do with that?

Are you going to tell me it's not a flaw now? Or are you going to tell me to put my head in the sand? Look through my post history on this thread and how much I've supported this guy.

Genuinely don't know what the fuck you're on about. When you said you weren't talking about his freezing god damn, you meant it. Unfortunately, that's the topic at hand, so...?

You can turn a blind eye to the flaws he need to iron out and the areas he need to improve while being a fanboy of his, but I won't.

I can agree he has flaws he needs to work on, but if you're going to call me a fanboy for supposedly ignoring his flaws when I'm talking about the god damn issue of FREEZING maybe instead of digging your head in the sand you can try pulling it out of your ass first.

As for his freezing then the post above nails it and while it may work at times, it's not great for a goalkeeper to premeditate so many shots.

Maybe it's not great, but it's not nearly the problem people are so desperate to make it out to be. He has yet to concede a goal this season while still making saves and a lot of it comes down to having proper defending in front of him, which more often than not goes completely ignored by the hate mob that forms every time he concedes a goal.
