always praised for his ball playing abilities...clears it every time he gets it

Since Di Maria happened he has a phobia. Ironically we are conceding more from kicking it right back to the opposition than we would with risky short passes.

we conceded the 1st after he blootered it up the pitch when he had a few options to play it short to.

This. I swear, sometimes Valdes looks like his brain just shut down. It's incredible. Why would you deliberately hand the ball over to the opponent? It's ridiculous and he's been doing it for years. That goal would never have happened if he just kept hold of the ball for five fucking seconds. Can't wait for him to leave.

He did lead the team to the semis almost single handedly. But Bayern knew how to make the best of him not being able to be the dominant GK in the air.

just compare him with dortmund's goal-keeper weidenfeller and his reactions in their last game! then you won't miss something! i don't know why we always mix football facts with love?

The player you're talking about is called Messi.

Great!

I will miss him, was a great goalie. When any other GK makes mistakes they are let off but him boy he got crucified.

Occasional fantastic save from close range that Valdes manages to pull from time to doesn't make him great. He is probably the only player in this Barcelona side that you can legitimately claim that he benefited greatly from having all those world class player infront of him+amazing system.

Valdes is not even close to being great and the second he steps out of Barcelona he''ll be exposed BIG time.

He is most certainly a Barca legend regardless of what others say, came in and kicked out Rustu who was still a decent GK back then and also ensured that we had a good reliable GK for the first time since Zubi had left us.

As for the whole benefiting from a great side where he had to make very few shots per game is completely BS in my opinion, it is way easier to be concentrating and making saves when you are under pressure throughout the game but a whole lot harder when you have little or nothing to do and then suddenly have to spring into action from a counter attack etc

Nothing of this makes him a ''great'' GK.

Barcelona under Pep Guardiola was usually that dominant that Valdes wasn't under any sort of real pressure, especially with defending set-pieces. Guardiola developed a great tactics to minimize dangers of having short players and trash GK in terms of dealing with football when in air. His ONLY job was basically saving a 1 on 1 chance from time to time and it's not like Barca were giving a lot of those. We've seen what are his real qualities when teams actually started to dominatee Barcelona this past season. Can't rush from his goal line to save his life, tends to let in A LOT of soft goals and is often out of his position, can't play with his legs very well for shit despite some Barca fans claiming it's his greatest quality.

As I said, you'll see how good Valdes actually is once he is out of Barcelona and playing for some lower level club because there is no way any serious CL contender will come for him.

We should send our shit players to Arsenal. Payback for all the overpriced junk we keep buying from them. Arsenal-please cone and take VV.

He made some crucial saves in the 2006 CL Final and the 2009 CL semis. However alot of times where he fucked up or could have done better. Our team protected him because the opposition hardly got near our goal when we were dominant.
