Can't say as the poll didn't specify that.

It's not like those who saw, played with or coached the legends aren't already starting to say it.

Willem van Hanegem (teammate Cruyff WC74) "Messi is in his eyes the greatest of all-time."

He used to say that Maradona is the greatest and best ever (for example in his biography) but yesterday he said it is Messi. He was asked for his top five:

1. Messi
2. Maradona
3. Cruijff
4. Pelé
5. Iniesta

I like the one against Stuttgart
Copenhagen for me, it's so clean and effortless hit.

Saw the one vs Copenhagen live, was the first Messi goal I had seen live.
Was a fun night, Barca struggled and in the last min Messi scored the winner abd won me 100 Euro cause I had a bet on him scoring a brace.

After watching all the evidence the winner, the longest range goal, has to be the one against ManU or that U20 vs Brazil. Some pitches are larger so I might be wrong.

Messi has 8 missed penalties (1 scored from rebound, 5 saved, 1 over, 1 post); 34 scored + 1 in shoot-out. In Barca 1st and Argentina senior. That's 84 % conversion rate (or 81.4% without rebound score).

Cronaldo missed three last season (Bayern, Bilbao, Turkey). He also missed one against Almería in 2009-10 (in the match he was sent off). He missed one against Chelsea 2007-08 UCL final shoot-out. Two other with ManU (one against Barcelona in UCL). At least 7 missed, that is. 49 converted penalties. 87.5 %.

That's interesting. I believe the average conversion rate for penalties is around 77%. That makes Messi decently above average in penalty kicks.

You dont get it, its not that Leo is bad at penalties its just that he is average at them for a man that is godlike at almost everything else.
He should definity still take our penslties but people are less confident about him scoring than when Zlatan or even Balotelli takes a penalty.
I think the problem is his are too soft, penalties are more difficult when they are shot very hard (high) in a corner, Messi takes them more relax like Maradona .
People overreact him missing penalties though cause of the chelsea miss, in la liga he had a very goid conversion rate last year, I think he only failed in the game vs Sevilla where it took 10 min in the final sec before he could shoot, cesc got choked by kanoute and the goalie had a great game.

The Sevilla and Chelsea games are only important penalties that I can think he has missed? Cronaldo has missed twice in UCL SF's and once in Final. CDR is what brings Messi's conversion rate down, 1/5. On league level, I think his conversion rate is actually same as Zlatan's.

According to Jordet et al, "Attackers successfully convert 83.1% of their penalties, midfield players convert 79.6% and defenders convert 73.6%." So Messi is only average.

Messi's? Cristianos?

That's based on all around averages, which should come down more you take, as goalies get more used to your shooting. It's easier to take 1 penalty than 10. That's why totally random shooting is the best way to go.

Messi's.

Hmm. Average conversion rate in the Premier League is 77% over the last 11 years.

http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/news/features/on-the-spot-keepers-shine-in-penalty-battle.html

And since the premier league obviously doesn't have penalty shootouts, you're mostly seeing attackers or midfielders taking them. Either way, penalties in the PL are being taken by the #1 penalty taker on the team, and still only 77% are converted. I can't imagine that the average would be that different in other leagues, and 11 years is a huge sample size. The link you give might show that players are better at them at the international level (maybe because the #1 penalty taker of a national team in a major international tournament is going to be better on average than the #1 penalty taker of a random league side). I imagine just penalties from major international tournaments is also a fairly low sample size compared to 11 years of league matches, so maybe it's less reliable a number.

Either way, though, I wouldn't really say that someone is an average penalty taker if they do it as well as the average attacker penalty taker in a major international tournament. That attacker is likely to be the best attacker for an entire nation that is evidently quite a strong footballing nation (or the country wouldn't be at the major tournament in the first place). Thus, that player is probably far above average as a penalty taker.

From same study (data from World cup, UEFA Euro, Copa America) "Players aged 22 or younger successfully convert 85.2% of attempts. Those aged between 23 and 28 convert 77.6%, and those aged over 29 years convert 78.1%."

So Messi, above average :) But to be fair, this data is not comparable, because these numbers are from penalty shoot-outs. Players who have played less, have better conversion rate.

less reliable
Just right.
