I'm not sure about the exact figure but I think Messi has missed around 7-8 penalties in his career. Last season he also missed a crucial penalty against Sevilla. It is one area where he could improve.

Im not critisizing Leo though, the long shot thing is true, he is average at them, its not a bad thing, out system does not rely on Messi shots from 40 yards out.
No player is amazing at everything, almost all of them are bad at a few atributes, Leo isnt. He is average at a few things and thats oki, completely regardless of Ronaldo bu the way.
He doesnt have to improve mediocre attributes when he is godlike at others imo, we all surely respect him for it.

Long shots are overrated. What is their conversion rate? Look at Ronaldo. He scores maybe out 1 out of 50 shots. Whereas Leo's every other great dribble ends up in the back of the net. Besides how will Barca control possession if they keep shooting from long range. This is one of the main reason that Barca's opposition lets them have so much possession. They don't have the dribbling and ball control skills of our team. They are forced to hot on the counter and take long shots often.
But Leo can definitely improve in penalty taking. Interesting point who will take our penalties if Leo is out? Cesc, Iniesta or Xavi?(Villa will most probably be on the bench

Messi doesn’t look like an athlete – not in the traditional sense of the word, anyway. If you didn’t know what he looked like and you passed him on the street, you probably wouldn’t look twice. For a man of such exceptional talent, Messi just seems so incredibly ordinary, average, normal. But he’s not – words from the thesaurus could be racked, stacked and broken and you still wouldn’t be able to describe him adequately.
Having already netted 88 goals this year – surpassing Gerd Muller’s 1972 record of 85 goals – he still has a game to go to add to his tally. And it would be a surprise if he didn’t manage to net at least one more.
While players across all sports often go through bad patches, Messi seemingly doesn’t know when to stop. And while this writer would be foolish to try and wind up words about the little magician like Sid Lowe does, she does know that at the age of 25, Messi is already a legend – and we can expect records to fall at his all-conquering feet like empires fell at the feet of Napoleon.
And just like the little French general, the little Argentinian will likely rule the football field for a long time to come.

Messi has 8 missed penalties (1 scored from rebound, 5 saved, 1 over, 1 post); 34 scored + 1 in shoot-out. In Barca 1st and Argentina senior. That's 84 % conversion rate (or 81.4% without rebound score).
Cronaldo missed three last season (Bayern, Bilbao, Turkey). He also missed one against Almería in 2009-10 (in the match he was sent off). He missed one against Chelsea 2007-08 UCL final shoot-out. Two other with ManU (one against Barcelona in UCL). At least 7 missed, that is. 49 converted penalties. 87.5 %.

We debunked that myth few months ago but still thank you for another reminder. Some people still cling onto it probably because Messi missed few more of those important ones.

some of the votes are just mesmerizing. khedira over xavi, fellaini over iniesta, most of them vote their fellow countrymen etc. it's just bullshit.

other than that people don't even care about the criteria, they just vote with their hearth, which makes it nonsense in first place. there are very few journalists without any bias.
