Ronaldo has been a goalscoring machine but he never had any truly important goals in the CL. He scored the fourth goal against Bayern and fourth against Atletico. His world cup was dreadful. The world cup should have a very big impact on that years balon dor.

I'm not a Ronaldo fan. He doesn't play for my team anymore and for me personally, his pining for Madrid whilst at United counters the good stuff he did for us. He's just another player to me.

So I can say with a total lack of bias, that he had a much better 2013/14 than Messi...by quite a distance actually. It's only really some Barca fans here who seem to be unable to look at things objectively. Even fans on a Liverpool forum I visited seem to comfortably favor Ronaldo for it this year, and many of them still hold a lingering distaste for him because of his United past.

The past seasons you mention are irrelevant really. I'm not debating who deserved the award then, but just for who deserves it this time around.

Balon dor is annual, so the titles to be considered for the one cr got this year were the ones from 12-13. The 13-14 are being taken into account for the balon dor this year. So no, it's not irrelevant. Corruption played a big part in cr getting his bdor last january. I don't think Messi deserves it this year, but if the logic applied for cr winning for the year 2013 is the same, then Messi deserves it. Broke 2 major records. It's more than what cr did last year, when he was awarded the bdor. I don't know how this can be irrelevant. Just shows the state of things in current football.

Also, except for the titles, cr statistically doesn't have no real advantage on Messi. Counting goals and assists, Messi has 73 this year, and cr 72. Messi also had a much better world cup.

I don´t agree with this.Just no.
Ronaldo would be a worthy winner though.

I agree with most of what you say but there was a bit of a love in between Ronaldo and the Liverpool fans a few weeks ago and he was quoted as saying they always respected him etc.

They probably like him because he left Man Utd at his peak.

There might be something in that, but on the whole I'd say most of them still hate him. He does still speak favorably (in public) about United, so I'm sure that keeps their dislike of him fairly raw.

Anyway, I'm detracting from the Messi debate, so I'll leave it at that.

You can be as neutral as you want, but how can you think that this argument has any credibility ?
Listening to you, the Ballon d'Or is decided from September to mid-november (from the start of the season til the end of the votes), right ?
How many Penaldo did he score ? 7 ? Seriously, don't you think that those 7 goals are over-rating his season ?

Anyway, he was shit during the most important contest of the year, the world cup. His excuse was that he suddenly injured his knee and couldn't be 100%, what a coincidence.

The fact that Leo won the Ballon D'or after scoring 91 goals without winning any major trophies changed the way most of the football fans nominate the best player in the world. CR7 scored two more goals than Messi in 2014, and the latter was pure shit during the world cup, then automatically Cristiano should win the Ballon D'or ? This is probably what you think, and if this is the case, allow me to tell you that you do understand shit about football.

Cristiano Ronaldo is probably the Ballon D'or of the period going from September to mid november, but never the best player of the year 2014.

Who was the best player in 2014 in your opinion?

Messi in no way deserved it this year. He did have a better world cup than Ronaldo but if thats the criteria to go by he didnt deserve it in 2010.

If Messi wants to be named best player in the world again he needs to step it up more in the biggest games.

For the record, I am a Barca fan and Messi fan and I think Ronaldo deserves to win the BD this year. However, I don't get it why you said Ronaldo was much better than Messi and by quite a distance. Care to elaborate?

He was better in the CL

Ronaldo was better overall in the biggest domestic games as well.

Out of nine games against Atletico and Real Messi had one good game.

If you are not scoring/assisting in the latter stages of the CL, the top games of La Liga or the latter stages of the world cup then you will struggle to win these awards.

Not only was Messi not performing in some of these games he was being targeted for lack of effort etc.

Personally I think Suarez was best player in world last season but no chance he would ever get this award.
