We've played a 4-4-2 diamond a bit this season (a repositioned 4-3-3 basically), it's how Cesc operated as a false 9 towards the end of his time there (late december and january) and Messi has too in recent games. The wingers become wide forwards and running targets, Messi drops into midfield, and Alves/Alba act as the wide midfielder for an outside option and to stretch the play. It has really opened up the play when we've used it, and it's a simple in game shift whenever the situation invites it. We rarely adhere to one style of play or formation in a game these days, which is why we aren't lacking dimension or deadliness as we did last year.
I don't think we need to buy an Aguero type player at all, he isn't even that stereotypical #9 that could be used as a plan B. Our wingers score a lot, they aren't just useless in attack. Deulofeu adds another dimension on the right side upon his return. In the forwards department we lack very little, if anything, in terms of personnel.
