Or maybe he's just going through a bad patch? Just because Messi hasn't show any signs of form in his career doesn't mean that the level of his performances can't vary. Bit of a hyperbole to talk of decline, losing x qualities etc after a few months of sub-par performances, sub-par by his level that is, especially when the tactics we play really don't suit him or the team as a whole.

his stats are still good but his overall contribution has been less this season.

Everyone's, actually. Especially the last 2 months, everyone was supbar. 2014 was a mess. It's just too much to talk about declining and lost of interest.

 He was out of form the last month or so, sucks but it happens to every player, also there have been plenty of games this year (City return game, classico at the Bernabeu, Osasuna game, Getafe games when he just came back) to show that everything is still there skillwise so it must be more of a mental thing.

So why did he loose form after the Bernabeu game? I don't know, bad tactics, bad team energy, less focus and/or motivation? Who knows really but it happens he will be back to his best with the right coach.

41 goals and 14 assists this season while being out injured for 2 months and he has to apologize for poor performance  It only can happen at Barca...

i think its actually a combo with the main things being tiredness and just the team having a crap atmosphere and bad tactics. he was decently motivated until recently when i think he just gave up on the season along with some others.

the world cup is bad from barca pov. he won't have had much time to properly rest.

People should be grateful and commend Messi for this public message. He is taking the collective blame of the team on his shoulders and falling on the sword for others. The entire team took a huge dump the last 2 months of the season, on top of the clear problems that were there from the start.

Yet is only Messi coming out and asking forgiveness from the fans, doing a mea culpa and promising better for next season, when the majority of the blame does not reside with him. You wanted leadership, you're getting it.

Ditto. And people are questioning his commitment.

It is very likely that Messi is past his peak. Barcelona will never be as good as they were in 2008-2012, ergo Messi will never be as good. His projected career trajectory is definitely not upwards. People are being too sensitive about the word decline. It's all relative, could just mean he's not the 91 goal Messi anymore. Doesn't even have to be decline in skills, just decline in performance.

Are you actually serious? Sounds a little dramatic.

Yes. But almost no one cares about that... The amount of knee-jerk reactions he's getting is insane. Like it's all his fault.
Yet, if his legit goal had stood, he'd probably be hailed as a hero by the same people.

this is arguably the best year in cr7 career and he is two years older, and relies more on his physicality than football brain... just saying.

Look at the muppetry in this forum over the past year, a Barcelona forum no less...The biggest thing missing, IMHO, in this era and that of Laporta's is leadership

If he dominated the wc and wins it people will forget about this past season and hail him as the undisputed best again.
