Rafinha misplaced a ton of passes yesterday

Still probably less than Dembele who's passing accuracy is often horrible.
Especially the simplest passes.
It was the same in Dortmund.

calling Rafinha reliable in defending is hilarious

Not overly reliable.
But more reliable than Dembele.

Look at this:
Rakitic is a better defender than Coutinho.
Coutinho is a meh defender.
But Coutinho is still a better defender than Dembele.

Denis is a horrible, but really horrible defender due to his teen-girl physique.
But he is still better than Dembele.

So, Rafinha is Puyol compared to Dembele in terms of defending, regardless of how average his defending is compared to normal midfielders and attackers.

I don't know what balance did you see in him but he was the most destabilizing factor in our team

We had 5 midfielders + Roberto, 6 midfielders all over the field.
Classical midfielders over classical pacey wingers obviously work better for RV.
Both in last season (remember his 442 with 4 Cms) and in the last 5 matches.

The moment Valverde took him out we started playing good again

The moment Valverde took Dembele out of starting 11, we started to have more possession, control, balance, better defense and better results.
It works both ways.

You will say: it is because of Arthur.
I could reply: Madrid got tired eventually.
Or Semedo stepped in and Roberto offered fresh legs in midfield.

Another observation, Dembele showed more in 15 minutes than Coutinho in 75. So if you want to be fair you should also take that into a consideration.

This is a weird random fact.
Anyone showed more in 5 minutes against Sevilla than Dembele in a whole match.
It always works both ways.

The point is, on a larger sample:
1. without Dembele in a starting 11, we play way better and more balanced
2. Rafinha fits EV's tactics better, on a larger sample. For example, Inter's match.
3. it doesn't mean that Dembele can't produce moments of magic. We all agree that he can.
The point is: for EV's tactics, any average, well rounded all-rounded midfielder-winger is a better fit than Dembele who is a magician in some aspects and the worst player in our starting 11 in some other aspects.

For majority of you: magic and dribbles win over other factors and you would always pick Dembele.
For EV, me, and some other guys here: all round skills without magic currently win against Dembele's moments of magic and overall poor allround game and inconsistency.

It is a matter of philosophies, ultimately. You are a pragmatist and hence don't like flashy players like Dembele or Neymar. Adventurers love them, though.

When you pack the team with slow midfielders and strikers, better teams will play a 3-5-2/4-5-1 high press knowing that you have no players who can beat the press with pace. Real Madrid did this for 10 minutes and Roma did this to Barcelona last season.

Why doesn't everyone do it all the time?

Lel.
Rafinha doesn't bring anything to a team

1. midfielder
2. possession
3. being good in simple passes
4. midfield balance
5. workrate
6. defending
7. not being a turnover machine
8. being good in link up play
9. understanding Barca's movement in possession style tactics
10. player's IQ and decisions
11. motivation, professionalism

More or less, Rafinha brings more than Dembele in every single of those.

On the other hand:
1. occasional magic
2. dribbles
3. pace
Demebele is better in those.
But football is much more complicated than that.

Ironic in describing the complexity of football that you miss out on its most basic element - scoring goals.

I wonder why....

He's fine. But if we're looking to sell, and it's not that far fetched, we should take no loss with him. In teams that play on the counter frequently, and can give him freedom he'd be a killer on pace and agility alone almost.

We are not looking to sell, it's a another clickbait FFS.

Dembele = De Jong and De Ligt that simple.

Is it worth it? Imho yes

 Or Dembele = Neymar or Dembele + Coutinho = Mbappe

I could honestly see us selling, if we revieve a tasty offer. The way EV plays doesn't really cater to someone like Dembélé, which should be clear by now. So unless the club is actually looking for a new coach behind the scenes, I could see us letting him go.

There have been reports that Valverde will be looking to use the exit clause in his contract to leave at the end of the season so I wouldn't count on him staying regardless of how this ends.

That said, if they get a huge offer for Dembele and he blows hot and cold the entire season I won't be surprised if they pull the trigger and use that money in the funds to bring de Ligt, de Jong and possibly an established forward.
