What's the margin between "good player" and world class player then? Does being best player for Brazil, above Neysnek counts for something?

People have different views on how they classify what is World Class and not. But for me, Coutinho, especially in the last couple of seasons with Liverpool and with Brazil, was World Class
The situation these days with him stinks but no doubt in my mind he was WC when we bought him.

He was/is totally in the Neymar, DeBruyne and Silva bracket. Did you miss the World Cup when he was the best player in his team although they had the likes of Neymar and Marcelo playing? Coutinho was simply World Class and among the very best players in the Premier League when we signed him.
His main problems are that our system with 3 defensive players behind a front trio doesn't suit him, and that he's coming after an injury and still trying to find his form.
I see. Well, if that is your defining parameter, Coutinho slightly falls short on being World Class for you.

You're calling him world class based purely on 4-5 games in the world cup? Guess they were right and Messi really is only the 5th best player in the world based on that logic.
There is no way he was in the same bracket as those guys over the course of the full year/season.
I think people tend to give players a world Class status too easily. It should be reserved for the top of the top imo.
To be clear I believe that players like Rio Ferdinand, alba, peak Suarez etc are/were world class and players like xavi, iniesta, alves etc as all time greats.
I would classify coutinho in a tier just below world class.

Coutinho has been a very good player at times, but never world class. Him having 3-4 better games than an out of form and not fully fit Neymar doesn't change that.
He's at a similar level to players like Eriksen or Dybala but definitely below the level of true world class players like Neymar, KDB, Silva, Hazard, or Modric at their best.

Its on Valverde thiugh. Bring in Pep and guys like Coutinho and Dembele are performing like De Bruyne and Sterling.

There can be as many tiers as you want below world class depending on the level of the players.
There's no need to be upset that Coutinho isn't world class, you've given no justification other then citing a couple of world cup games. Liverpool doesn't seem to really miss that world class talent either - not that necessarily proves anything.

There are different people with different opinions and they voice them depending on player performances. We shouldn't be selling Dembele or Coutinho, we should be ensuring that they're able to adapt and work in a effective/functional system.
Dembele has without a doubt been a decisive player for us, so there isn't much to say against him currently where as Coutinho is struggling and is getting the brunt of criticism because of his price tag.
We bought Coutinho to fulfill the Iniesta role but so far he's been atrocious there for various reasons (when he has played there). We need him to improve and make that position his own. I personally would of preferred if we purchased other players for that position but it is what it is.
