5 - Iñigo Martínez

Would be a genius move tbf.

Athletic not able to sign him. Barca signs him. Then offers 15m + him for Laporte a year later.

Some Bilbao fans on a Bilbao forum I visit would like this move to happen because.

-It weakens La Real

-If he doesn't work out they think they have a good chance of signing him from us

-Means we aren't going after Laporte

1-Mascherano was probably top 5 CB in 15/16 season, he was monster that year. Last year he was inconsistent and it is normal he will be 3rd choice next year. He isn't bad
2-Marlon was at some point a starter in Brazil, played well here with B team and when called with 1st team. That isn't comparable to other La Masia or Halilovic
3-Mina is a starting CB in Colombia and starter in Brazilian league.

Those aren't valid comparison, I would understand signing Inigo if it was 15-20M signing, but for 32 with current CB situation it is questionable move unless we see him as good enough to challenge Pique & Umtiti
Douglas was a consistent starter for sao paulo before he came to us, One can even argue he was one of their best players, Does that mean he's automatically worthy of a bench spot for FCB?, No.
So sorry, But your Marlon and Mina argument doesn't hold up.

Except that Douglas was considered a bad starter for Sau Paulo and many of their fans wanted an upgrade over him, wasn't international, was 24 years of age when signed. He wasn't the level of Mina and Marlon is younger and already showed more potential than Douglas ever did with us

Not too bothered by the transfer. If Valverde believes Marlon is not ready, then he is right to ask for a 3rd CB. Inigo Martinez is an excellent player. A lot better than Mathieu. Only recently turned 26 as well.

Radio Marca confirmed Valverde wants Inigo, and that if he develops well, Valverde wants him to become a starter.

It's marca still, but too many sources reporting the same.

No he isnt. Thats why he's still playing for Sociedad at 26. He got a couple of caps for Spain many years ago when people thought he might become good, but he's way past it these days.

To be honest, I'm sick and tired of posters automatically assuming the worst about pretty much every player we sign.

Yeah, but 30+ mil for 3rd CB?

Maye you forgot how the market is. PSG just paid 222m. for one player two days ago.

That has nothing to do with Inigo Martinez being average and playing at his level right now. He's 26 and wont be signed by any big club. Ever. For a good reason. We have no competition for him. Making him a record signing is just stupid. Spending money on Mbappe, Dembele and others who actually belong at an elite club makes sense. Signing the Varmaelens, Songs and Martinez' of the world makes no sense.
