Cut the snark. He seeks to maximize the chance of keeping his job. Thats a short term objective. If it were up to him, he would spend a gazillion euros on short term signings, knowing full well he is not likely to stay for long, looking at the history of our coaches, and someone else will have to clean up the mess of having a dozen deadwood players on high wages.
And how will he be able to maximize the chances of keeping his job?.......other than to actually win trophies, Which as far as i remember it's what he was brought to do, Am i missing something?
And what a weird and convoluted way to phrase a sentence just to avoid saying "he seeks to maximize the chances of winning trophies"

All successful clubs, have a balance of signing young players with long term plans usually chosen by the sporting directors, And signing older more experiences players for immediate impact on the team usually done by the coach, That's the healthy way of managing a squad, To MAXIMIZE the chances of winning trophies.

You'd think Valvarde is asking for the entire Bilbao team...It's the only signing he's requested so far.

Except Inigo is an average player playing at his appropriate level right now, he's only signed because Valverde knows him personally. Thats a tunnel vision strategy only serving to make Valverde feel safer because he is familiar with the player and we are losing out on real targets that would strengthen us as a result. Signing Inigo is a typical signing where the player cant believe its true that Barca actually want to sign him for 32m. Thats not what successful clubs do. No successful club is going to sign Inigo. We dont have competition for that guy. For a good reason. The idea that players like Umtiti cant have an impact immediately is silly. Of course they can. Same with Dembele. Just because they are young and long term investments, doesnt mean they are bad and will only become good in 4 years.

It is really. 26 isnt "only". He comes with a massive price tag, a price tag fit for a player who could play for us for a decade, he wont improve, his level is at the Sociedad level. He's been playing there for half a dozen years for a reason. He is like the Arda Turans and Vidal signings of the world. More Basques are probably joining as well if he gets his will. He is looking for players he is familiar with while younger players or players he doesnt know is a scary thought for his job security.
 Valverde need not be familiar with Socidad's players

What are you talking about? Valverde is of course very familiar with a guy like Inigo. Do you think just because he coached Bilbao he isnt familiar with Inigo? Dont be naive.

"Won't improve", "Sociedad level"? What kind of logic is that? Is Asensio Mallorca level then?

I don't agree that a 26-year old CB is a "short-term" signing, he's got atleast 6-7 years left in top flight football. IMO not a short term signing. However, does he have the required level to play for Barca? That I'm sceptical of (which rather makes the age discussion void and null)

There is a huge difference between signing a highly talented 19 year old from Mallorca and an average 26 year old from Sociedad. There is a very good reason why he still plays there. And no, he wont improve. He's reached his level and its not good enough for us.

The question everyone linked to Barca need to ask themselves is this.

How many players have we signed from la liga clubs who we believed were better than the level they are showing and came here and be total waste.

Adra
Paco
Gomes

Don't let the same mistake happen for the 4th time

Yes.
Might as well add Mathieu to that list as well

We've also signed players domestically that have been a success. I bet the ratio of successes to failures is no different compared to when we buy abroad

with 32M you could get Davinson Sanchez/Lemos + Mina whom are both better and younger than Inigo.
I thought Ernie would have been smarter than Lucho but starting to doubt him already.
