He'll cost 62M euros with tax now. He will stay at Athletic for a long time, unless he becomes Maldini reborn.

Too bad we didn't go for him. He's still a work in progress, but clearly will be a beast.

Should have gone for him instead of wasting our time on Marquinhos and getting PSG to sell him. The club was clearly willing to pay big money since they bid 44m for Marquinhos last summer.

Marquinhos is on totally different level than him .Laporte price is just way too high and they have put him out of almost everyone reach
There is a reason that 2 years in a row clubs like Barca/RM/Many/City are interested and non has been serious about him .he isn't a starting material yet for big club and he would be the most expensive defender in history if his release clause was paid + taxes even when it was 42M

Last summer when we were interested in getting Marquinhos he had not showed more than Laporte to adjuge him to be better, never mind being on a totally different level.

He was great this/last season though.

Marquinhos cost PSG 30-33m and no one else other than them(Leonardo with the sole credit) showed real interest in signing back then so going by that logic PSG should not have got him since he cost too much and wasn't ready to be a starter.......

Marquinhos was much better than Aymeric since he was in Roma at the age of 18 .Laporte has way too many bad showing just like he has many good games .Marquinhos was more consistent when he was 2-3 years younger
And 33M is far less than 50M

Laporte's buyout at a time was 36m. And taxes are not added to the transfer fee.

And I disagree, I don't think Marquinhos had any better showings than Laporte with Roma. Besides, it's a bit unfair to compare Roma and PSG with Athletic Bilbao. Both Laporte and Marquinhos have showed themselves to be excellent, World Class talents who can rise to the occasion. While Marquinhos now with PSG have had more consistent great games, Laporte has had some really beastly games, particularly against us and Real Madrid.

Both Roma back then and PSG now had and now got a better team with much more defensive stability than Athletic Bilbao.

I think Laporte is one of the most overrated young CBs right now ,he is good for a starter for a club like Bilbao but he is a bench player for a big club right now.any club paying big money for him is paying it for potential and that is very risky .it could end up like Mangala than Marquinhos
And Laporte renewed his contract b4 the end of 2013-2014 season when our interest was real . and it was up to 42M .we had absolutely zero chance of signing him with 36M due to his choice and loyalty
And in many cases taxes are considered from transfer fee, just like ILLarramendi .his release clause was 30M yet most people say he moved to RM for 39M b/c of the taxes .it is a money we pay anyway
42M + taxes for Laporte? there is a chance it could work .but there is as big of a chance it will be a disaster

People said the same about Marquinhos and he was neither well established or experienced when PSG moved for him. They paid for his potential + his current ability and performances back then.

He agreed to a new contract which upped his buyout from 36m to 42m in June last year.

Would Marquinhos been a starter for us in 2013? Nope. So I don't really understand where you're going here. The idea should have been to have Laporte and Mascherano rotating for the starting position with the former eventually taking over.

That way you would have had atleast three very good CB options and a blend of youth + experience.
