Well, that's the problem. Memphis' natural position is where Griezmann presumably will play.

Sadly Haaland is better. Lautaro is the best available right now.

While he might not be a natural winger Memphis is still more natural there than Griezmann.

I agree with that. Anyway, it all depends on the system Koeman is planning to play. If it's a 4-2-3-1 with Messi as the #10 then Memphis cannot be the striker.

The 4-2-3-1 seem to be his preferred system.

Could also see him trying out something like this:

Pjanic - Frenkie

Messi - Donny - Ansu/Dembele

The more I think about this the more I think IF Suarez leaves (or at least he's relegated to the bench) and we won't buy Lautaro then I'd play Messi as a striker. He's not as clinical as he once was but is still the best goal scorer we have. With his lack of movement just keep him closer to the goal. We'd need to improve a service to get him the ball though or he'd start coming deeper.

Don't really know what the best system would be to put both him and Griezmann in there. I think a 4-2-3-1 like this

Memphis/Fati-Griezmann-???
Messi

could potentially work but a problem here is we don't have a guaranteed starter at RW unless we'll play Fati there. Dembele can't stay fit and while I like Trincao I think putting him straight into the starting lineup might be a bit too much for him. We shouldn't break him (or any other youngster) in what will most likely be a lost season. Sure, they should get enough playing time to develop and show what they can do but don't put them in a position they're not ready for (yet).

This guy made an analysis of how we could play Messi and Griezmann together

Good analysis. Maybe time will prove we could give Setien a credit to find the right way to utilize Griezmann and Koeman has seen the same in those small sample of games mentioned (I assume as a Barca fan he has watched more or less all our games even with FDJ not playing in most league games after corona break).

Or maybe he has an even better solution. Either way I think Griezmann is a class player who can still offer a lot and the whole team will benefit if we'll find a way to get the best out of his talent.

Another good thing is I think Trincao could also play as an inside forward so maybe a 4-3-3/4-3-1-2 with inside forwards is what we should do.

FDJ/Busi
Pjanić-VDB/Puig
Messi
Ansu/Memphis-Griezmann/Trincao

When Messi would be rested (which he should do more often) we would also have several players who could play in his position.

We wouldn't have a 30+ goal scorer but anyone of the front four has potential to score 15-20 goals. With a better movement around him I think Messi would also come in more goal scoring chances. And Donny could also provide goals from midfield, maybe Pjanić as well.

Raul Jimenez is something we should go for but not even looking at him. He is the type of striker I really like: athletic, fast and offers constant runs in behind while still being very good with the ball. Very few like him. Get him and Aubemeyang and we look like CL winners again for like 80m.
Thats two players who actually can play with Messi.

Too bad he is probably off to Juventus.

Dont get fekin Depay
He was the suck at ManU

Sometimes players are just not ready yet when they sign for a big club.

Gnabry also failed at Arsenal, reset his career at Werder, Bayern got him for cheap and he's now one of the best wingers in the world.

Memphis was still young at that time and failed under pressure. He's a better and more mature player now and deserves a second chance.

Actually insane how Gnabry has improved and matured.

Arsenal let him go when he was 21 for 5M. That's less than we got for Marlon.

Puts into perspective that a 21 year old is far from done. One player who comes to mind is Alena, 22 years old and haven't done much yet. Despite him probably not reaching Gnabry's level, we for sure would get more than 5M for him today.
