umm. Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid were definitely in the running for Rakitic. With more time, an English club would have jumped in the fray as well.

Rakitic was bought for a very fair price.

Rakitic was going to leave this summer. He wouldnt have waited a year in the hope that Barca want him again when free. If there are a few clubs after a player his price wont drop just because he has one year left.

Suarez is on loan and would have been loaned out this year anyway. IF he looks to be good enough then Barca can most likely get him back.

Most press had - Atletico, Real Madrid, Liverpool as all being in for Rakitic.

They did not over pay for him at all if you think he is that good.

Liverpool were rumored to have interest. In this inflated market, 18m for Rakitic is a fair deal. Not to mention that Sevilla is a good club for Suarez to be loaned to. Besides if Suarez for sure wants to come back to Barca there is no need to pay the 3m euros to Sevilla at the end of the loan.

Hence why the price is important.

If they could pay below 15m euros for him and get two good seasons I would take that if he improves the squad in that time.

Last year he was 1 year younger and available for free and we didn't buy him. now we want to buy him for 15m ? I'd say getting Fazio/Musacchio might be better - better value, better height and less money. Of course this is assuming we'll buy a top CB which means Bartra/Secondary DF as 3rd choice and/or LB/RB.

I agree that Mathieu would be a really good signing, we need solid defenders who can play the squad game and he is one of those. We still need a top class CB starter but not 2 of them, Pique, Bartra, Mathieu and Benetia would be a great collection of CBs for next season plus Masch in an emergency. Not sure how realistic Benetia is but there are other options such as Hummels.

Yeah, Mathieu would be good as a bench CB if we pay 15m or less. Mathieu + someone like Benatia would be great. But getting Mathieu alone would suck.

Btw, Hummels isn't realistic. Benatia's more realistic than he is.
