The criticism is because he was labelled as "Mr. Champions League" by his legions of fans. Whereas in reality he was (easily) the best player of RM's CL winning machine, but far from THE ONLY reason they won those. Just look at the amount of clutch goals scored by Bale, Ramos, and Benz in CL semis or finals. Not to mention Keylor Navas or Modric or Kroos or Casemiro or Marcelo (those Bayern games are among the best attacking displays by a fullback ever).

"Mr. CL"'s return without an all star supporting cast at Juve was QF, R of 16 (Lyon), R of 16 (Porto). Not to mention they lost the league after winning it 7 times in a row without him. This is the basis for criticism. Serghei is right on this, superstar players take most of the credit when the teams win and most of the credit when the teams lose. It's only fair that way.

This

Ronaldo went to Juventus to deliver the champions league and he got nowhere near it. Still put up some good numbers but was only league top scorer in 1 out of 3. If he doesn't give you goals then he offers very little else to the side.

With that logic even Messi wouldn't have won CL without Xavi, Iniesta, David Villa, Neymar, Suarez, Puyol, Alves etc. He didn't win after they left. Even Messi was a massive failure in CL when Barca's as a team declined. CR7 like Messi was monumental for Real's success imo. He has a winning mentality and i don't think without him Real would've won 3 CL's in a row.

Don't think his time at Juve was disappointing or a failure, but it wasn't a success either.

Only as long as the salary is not considered - without that, it's actually a success considering the goal ratio and stuff

However, if you consider all the things, i.e., the salary and trying to change their game to suit his play and stuff; someone was mentioning he was the only attacking threat when they were kicked out of the CL the last 2 times - it's coz it was designed that way! All these considered, yeah it was a failure.

However, not as bad as the Griezmann shit though - come on, no way

Only if they don't win anything. But a cup is doable. Liverpool, City and Chelsea already look better than them in the league.

There are a few big personalities- speaking kindly - that have to be held together in that dressing room.
A manager who is simply a nice guy.

I wonder if Ronaldo could fall out big time at United?

Just a question, what will be considered as Messi's fail at PSG?
No CL will be a failure, right?
I mean, CR7's failure to win with Juve who didn't win it since 1996 is considered as a fail.

Just to follow the story in upcoming months.

** I just hope there won't be: "Psg had unbalanced midfield, it was not Messi's fault" excuses.

Ronaldo's failure in the ucl with Juve is that he didn't advance past the quarter finals stage. Also winning copa italia once (another crunch big game knockout scenario). His league form was very good.

Messi's failure will be if he doesn't turn up in crunch ucl games despite having plenty of forwards to play through and enough creative talent to get on the end of a few chances.

Both are pretty stupid takes imo, it's a team sport. Nobody in their right mind could expect Juve to win the CL, and even though Messi went to a better team we all know there are no guarantees for success in football.

Both are in their mid 30s and have nothing left to proof, but if anything it'll be about individual performance, not titles.
