Cristiano Ronaldo - v1

All the kidding aside, I think we should be able to objectively comment on CR7's perfect physical condition, his consistency (in that he has not slowed down yet) and his drive to succeed without being mocked.
No one is denying that. Nobody in their right mind would consider Ronaldo as something else than a world class player. The questionable thing was the Ballon D'Or claim, which blew his achievement of consistently scoring goals (against relatively weak opposition) this season out of proportion.

What strong opposition has Messi scored against that Cristiano hasn't?

Where did I say something about Messi? My statement was solely about Ronaldo. Scoring goals (to be exact scoring more goals than Messi) is about the only achievement Ronaldo had this year and a fairly bad reason for declaring him the deserved winner (or a more deserved one than Messi). Scoring goals doesn't make up for a titleless season. It's just that some people in this thread overreacted a bit about his goal scoring in the past few games, which got further emphasised by the current overly critical mood towards Messi on this board. Which is what was hinted at with those sarcastic posts.

OK sorry I did not have the context of the past few pages.

Tell me why Messi deserves the ballon this year over Ronaldo?

What did Ronaldo do this year to deserve the ballon d'or over Messi and Ribery ? Go missing against Dortmund in the semi ? behave like a 3 year old in the copa del rey final ?

Ballon d'Or shouldn't exist in this current format. They should give individual awards in irregular intervals (every 2, 3 or 4 years), maybe even multiple times in the same year if necessary, for the standout players of their generation. It's comical if Ribery goes down as a Ballon d'Or winner and players like Xavi, Iniesta, Pirlo, Maldini don't because of circumstances (Bayern winning everything in a year in which Messi got injured). Why give an individual award in a year in which there was no clear standout performer? I'm still not convinced Ribery is the best player even at Bayern.

In Ballon D'Or, you compete against others, it's not an absolute award. So a comparative analysis would be better.

I want to know why Messi deserves it over Ronaldo...

Using isolated examples is just stupid. One bad performance here and there doesn't mean much. He still scored a ridiculous amount of goals in 2013. Being consistent and performing over a long period of time is more important than just performing in "important matches". Besides, almost every match is important. Not just the knockout stage. And he still scored against Dortmund in the semis. Can't blame Ronaldo when it was Khedira and Pepe who were terrible in that first game.

And Ronaldo was still the top scorer in the CL that season, and is the top scorer this year as well. So your argument is actually not an argument at all.

I'm actually even more impressed by him this season. Real Madrid are not functioning at all but he's still scored 20 goals in 15 matches. Incredible record.

Should he win it? Probably not.

You didn't say it in your original post but in general it does seem that you think Messi should win over Ronaldo atleast.

Golden Boot means nothing, it's a scorer award but Ronaldo has scored more than Messi in 2013. And I think by now, he has a better goals/min ratio too. He has about as many assists as Messi, so he even clawed back on that advantage Messi used to have.

Barcelona won La Liga because of their incredible 55/57 first half of the season, which almost entirely fell in 2012. Further, Barca won every single one of their 6-7 league matches in the second half that Messi missed, so that's a further 18-21 points which he had no effect on.

Ronaldo has played better than, or on par with, Messi in each and every single one of the 4 Clasicos in 2013. He has 2 goals in 300 min, while Messi has 1 goal in 360 min.

He scored against Atletico in the cup final and when he left, the score was still 1-1. Messi, on the other hand, walked off when Atletico were leading 1-0 in may, and again when they were leading 1-0 in August. Moreover, he missed a penalty against them in the next game.

In the champions league games, Messi did not do any better than Ronaldo either.

So, I just wanted to know why it seems to be blasphemy to suggest that Messi is less deserving than him. Certainly, it's a lot lot closer than Barcaforum would have you believe
