Daniel Alves

Guess what? A RB's primary role is to defend. Attacking is a bonus. Alves has been absolutely horrendous in defending in the last 2-3 seasons. His attacking contributions do not justify his poor defensive performances. And this includes even the scenario where he's instructed to be more involved in attack than the usual fullback.

Why not play alves at RW if he is not required to defend? Heck he plays like one really

A RB has to defend when his teams does not have the ball and to participate in the offensive play when his team has the ball. When Barcelona has the ball Alves goes and brings his contribution in the attack. That's 65-70% of the time against 95% of the teams out there.

For a team that keeps the ball 40-45% of the time, like Chelsea or some italian team, Dani Alves is not that effective . But for a team that has 65% of the ball every game, he is one of the most important players.

A right back that is too afraid to go forward when we have possesion, because he might be caught too far up the field, is useless for us. Alves has the flair and the quality to take those risk. And they payed off more often than not this season.

But with each his own. I think Alves and Lahm, in no particular order are head and shoulders the best RB's out there. The fact that some ranked Pablo Zabaleta above Dani was something I didn't agree at the time and something that has been proven wrong.

FC Barcelona plays a high risk game. Dani Alves is a high risk RB. Perfect fit.

Barçapocalypse NOW!
He was good attacking, surprisingly he actually had 3 or 4 very good crosses, but that doesn't make it worth it to defend with just 3 guys while he is jogging back from the midfield... His defending is atrocious and could have costed us if Espanyol players actually wanted to win...

If you tell me that there is another RB in the world today, that could score two goals against a side like City in a CL knockout fixture, than you must really hate Alves.

And if you tell me a RB at Barcelona must be ZERO in offense, than you are mistaking Barcelona with Inter or some other seria A team. We attack more than we defend and we need a player who can understand and share the offensive appetite of a team like Barcelona. And Alves provides good enough defensive stability. In case you didn't notice, we were solid in defense in all big games this season, except the Bernabeu match. And that with Alves on the right side. He was one of our best men in the clasico on Camp Nou, decisive against Atletico in the Supercup, scored that great goal on the Ettihad vs. Man. City, the one that made our life a lot easier on Camp Nou. What more do you want?

+1

Folks it is very unlikely there is a full back that can attack as good as he defends and vice versa while performing and delivering at top level like Alves does...
We should be happy we don't rely on just montoya or make shits like Adriano, Puyi who who knows who else.

Are you stupid? Alves' most important role is linkup play in the attack. If you want to see a RB that primary defends, go watch the Serie A.

Fun fact, a RB primary duty is to defend first.

Fun fact:

Barca 70% possesion -> Alves 70% offensive, link-up duties.
Opponent 30% possesion -> Alves 30% defensive duties.

What you are saying is that you want Alves to be defending when we have the ball and that's so uncharacteristic for Barcelona. When we have the ball, we go forward, that's how we are. So, naturally, Alves goes forward too. As I said, that's 70% of the time against 99% of the teams out there. So, 70% of the time, Dani Alves is an attacking player.

We just don't take precautionary measures. We are a high-risk team, always operating with fine margins. People need to understand that and to accept the way we play the game.
