Mascherano has been phased out of CDM by sergi roberto and CB by grandpa
Now it is time to try him at RB and see what he can do :lucho:

Mascherano is such a strange case. Absolute class player, but is shifted around and around and then on the bench and back again. Why he is content with it we will probably never know.

He has played a huge number of minutes since he arrived and 90% of the time as CB. He hasnt been playing much in midfield, especially not before this season.

Mascherano hasn't been on the bench for any prolonged time in the last seasons. As for playing CB, I guess he's happy playing there in return for other advantages of playing for Barcelona.

Despite all, I think Mascherano has been an important part of the team over the past seasons and, from appearances, it seems he fits in well in dressing room too.

In general i think Mascherano has been underrated alot by Barca-fans, even to this day. He is a great player, a player of his quality should be appriciated more by the fans and the club. Yeah, he plays alot in cb, but he is not a cb even if he can do well there.

Alves could demand whatever he wanted if he was anything close to the player he used to be. He's terrible though and 5 out of 10 most weeks. Occasionally more and sometimes less. Adriano or Montoya can do a similar job for a few months.

If he's performing terribly now when he's playing for a contract, how bad will he be next season when he's a year older and got the contract he wanted?

Why is Alves being so greedy, think of the club man
Would you stay at your current job if they told you they want to lower your wages
They have you as their last resort, they think you are not very good but other options are even wweaker

His stance on the matter of a new contract is beyond absurd.

First of all, just like you said, he is nowhere near the player he was at Sevilla or his first 3 seasons with us. Moreover, he will now inevitably enter a period of an even deeper and potentially terminal decline as a footballer, yet he has the temerity to be making absurd demands over wages!!! He forgets that Barcelona can easily bring a brand new RB by this coming January. Somebody, you know, 10 years younger than him!

Professional football and accountancy (just to provide a random example) have zero similarities. In fact, in most regular jobs, a worker's value rises with time due to the accrual of experience and specialization in the job at hand. With professional football, it is the exact opposite. A footballer's value decreases with the passage of time, especially when past 30, and even more so when their decline becomes more than apparent even to the most casual of observers. Alves has zero ground on which to ask anywhere near the wages he has been receiving up to now. Simple as!
