Daniel Alves

it's either ego or money. The fans know, dani knows, that this board is rotten and on the way out, so there's not much to it.
As things stand it seems no club could offer anything substantially better than us. Never mind that fcb is back at the very top and that he loves the team. His scare tactics didn't work and he better keep his level up, because as much as people argue against or want to forget, he's been horrendous for a long time.

The best part about this deal is that we won't be stuck with only Montoya and Douglas until January. Other than that, this is way more beneficial for Alves than it is for the club. He'll continue being the starter, some of the backups will leave, and the others will never get serious game time with him around. At some point when he leaves or retires, we'll again be stuck with players who until that point have only played against the likes of Apoel and Cartagena, and we'll again be looking for either a replacement for him or more backups. This is a short term solution that will create a bigger problem in the long run. We just finished a treble-winning season, the pressure is off. We should have thanked Alves for his services and trusted Adriano/Montoya/Douglas/Bartra/Mascherano to do the job until January, then introduce Vidal and have him and Montoya rotate heavily and develop in real, meaningful games. This way we're going to have Alves playing, Vidal playing somewhat, Montoya leaving and Douglas just hanging out with the squad as he does. And in two years when Alves leaves, all we'll end up with is an unprepared Vidal and freaking Douglas. We had big changes in the squad last summer and it turned out great. Now was the time to take the next step and start a new chapter in the same way with our RBs, and prepare the squad for future seasons. This way we're only trying to keep it as it is for as long as we can, and what happens later we'll deal with later. Our RB situation will be a reprise of our CB situation.

Hopefully now we can show the door to deadweight like Adriano and Montoya.

Montoya will only leave because he's the best one between him, Adriano and Douglas, and still doesn't get playing time. If there's anyone in the squad who is deadweight personified, it's Douglas. Montoya would easily be a starter in most European teams.

Exactly this, now that he's staying, let's hope that it's the best version of him that's staying and not the other one.

People still talk about his "recent" decline, as if he had 5 great seasons then went out of form. But as TaF said, he's been horrendous for a long time. Basically half of his career here has been great and the other half has been absolutely terrible. The second part od 11/12, all of 12/13 and 13/14, and a big part of 14/15 were far from good. Strangely, you never hear the same about Pedro. When it's Pedro, then he was "good early on, but has been bad for several seasons now". Even though it's exactly the same period in question.

Obviously Vidal is being signed because Alves is leaving. You would think that much is clear. His contract is ending, he rejected our final offer, and we have a transfer ban, so no players with ongoing contract will be allowed to leave. Doesn't take much to put 2 and 2 together. Vidal is a direct replacement for Alves.

So, 2 + 2 is 5 right?

.

what are you talking about. I got lost in your post.

Alves renewing is positive. He still can perform at top level (giving that he is motivated) by January he will finally have a real competition from Vidal who is still young good player and can be long term solution for the club. Goodbye to Montoya and Douglas. How this is a bad plan?

What? There's depth at RB now. We'd be in trouble if we were to play Montoya/Douglas until January. That would be problematic. Now they will both leave, and there's 2 great players for the rb spot. And Alves renewing will actually make the transition easier to Vidal/whoever is also signed.

Seriously... your hatred for Alves really clouds your jugdment.

Alves has been sensational in 2015 and is one of the keys to the treble. Lucho already wanted to renew him several months ago. He wasn't amazing in the last couple of years but that doesn't change the fact that there is not one player in this world who could fulfill the important RB role in our team better than Alves and not only because of his chemistry with Messi. He is the perfect RB for this Barcelona. Vidal can learn from him and improve various necessary aspect of his game to be ready to replace Alves sometimes in the future.

Furthermore, Alves' presence in the locker room cannot be underestimated. Its important to have players who are able to keep the spirits among the squad high even in difficult times.

His renewal is fantastic news for the club.

Sporting wise it's a gamble, but a better gamble then him leaving, that's for sure.
And I disagree that "even when off form he's the best possible option", hell only a few months ago very reasonable people were baffled and wondered just wtf Alves had over Montoya, who no one even really rated. I'm one of the guys who won't forgive alves' behavior easily but that's irrelevant now.
Let's hope he does well and vidal gives him some serious competition to keep him fresh.

Dinorah (agent Alves): "I'm very happy with the renewal. We had two offers that were financially better, but Dani decided to stay." [cope]

And who do you think would be a better option for Barcelona?

An error of judgment, as it has been proved. There was never any comparison to be made between Alves and Montoya. Thank god Lucho knew that.
