While majority of 100M+ has flopped, no one arguing he is flop, but it is typical high risk high reward deal.
And I disagree with Porque that Liverpool can afford a 100M dud, they aren't owned by sugar daddy owner, they need to be ruthless in the market.
With Mane moving, Salah seems on his way out on free agency , VVD is 31, same with Thiago and most of their core is 29+ they will need to replace many players with other elite ones.
Having 100M flop sets them back massively, having 100 success ensures they are heading in right direction

True, 100m galactico type deals is not their method of action, nor the reason they reached the top, but they do have a master manager who kind of hides the downfalls of this strategy. This is Klopp we're talking about.

A player has to be an immense flop not to work under Klopp.

We'll see how it goes with them, but 100m signings are two times more worrying when they are done by dumb presidents, than at the request of one of the best managers of the last 10-15 years.

However, so far, they paid more than City, and got a lesser player. Not too impressed.

It's not ideal. It's catastrophic even in a business sense as an isolated deal. But it wouldn't ruin Liverpool. And with a well scouted player who has traits that fits the managers style, most of the top clubs can attempt one of these signings.

The problem doesn't come down to if they flop. But more down to these signings consistently flopping and chasing loses- building negative equity.

Madrid had Hazard. Man Utd had Maguire. Chelsea had Lukaku.

We had Dembele then Coutinho then Griezmann and also went under. Not just because of them, but a big part of the overall problem. The squad didn't have any other players of value to sell. Liverpool do (partly aided by their enticing wage structure for buying clubs).

That's what I'm getting at.

Well said. Plus that Bartomeu had other signings that were players supposed to become stars, bought for lower prices (around 30-40m which is basically the area where Liverpool hit it out of the park, see deals for Mane, Salah, now Diaz). All of those didn't work either. Players like Semedo, Gomes, Paco, Dest, Trincao etc. The list is very long.

His only big hit in the last 3-4 years was basically Pedri.

I think Nunez will do well at Liverpool but than Klopp has had very few players outright flop under him.
However Liverpool are on the slide. I think this season was really their opportunity to cement themselves in history. After all the media hype they still have only one epl and one cl. That is poor for a so called great team. Salah looks shot and Mane is leaving. Diaz is good but not great. Liverpool will continue to overachieve with Klopp at the helm but if Haaland works out for City I reckon they will test EPL and maybe CL apart.

Liverpool's descent into an also ran team has started. This is a panic buy more than anything, because they think they might not have Salah or Mane (or both) next season.

This does smell like a bit of desperation from Klopp, probably because he was so toothless vs top teams last year. 0 goals in 3 games in finals in like 350 minutes is terrible.

It's a bit hilarious that they have 3LWs now and they signed a clear 9 who can't play any other position. So they have Mane, Jota, and Diaz who all play on the left the best. And who give their 2nd best level at the position they signed a 100m player on.

100 million for a fellow who has only played in a two-horse Portuguese farmers league in one of those two teams. A big chance he will flop.

Gotta clear this up for once and all:
This isn't a panic buy at all. It's a super risky punt.

It's well known in Liverpool that Klopp is a massive admirer of this guy for a long long time. And I mean at a time when Nunez wasn't even hot property or known by people. Remember reading stuff about him thinking: "Who tf is this guy?"......this is before he became a hot topic in Football Forums or caught the eye.

One thing's for sure. This is a Klopp signing 100%. The scouts rate him too and hence they've agreed to spend big while selling Mane and a few others who'll leave.

What a massive risk!
